JANG JIYEON WAS IN A BIT OF A STICKY SITUATION.
With her sixteenth birthday quickly approaching, it was a given that she'd found herself in many of these over the years. But it would seem this one had managed to stump her, just a little more than the rest. You see, ever since Jiyeon was a baby, back when she was still wearing diapers and way too fascinated by keys jingling together, there had been this boy. This boy was, well, special. And by that, Jiyeon meant he was one of the the biggest losers she's ever met.
His name was James.
He was the youngest of the Zhao family. The Zhao had been intertwined with hers since long before they were born. Their parents had been friends since they were babies, and the same could be said for their parents before them. Her mother called it a legacy. Jiyeon called it a life sentence. Because of that supposed legacy, the two of them had been stuck together for as long as she could remember. Birthday parties, family dinners, school events, you name it.
Wherever Jiyeon went, it seemed James was never far behind.
Unfortunately, this meant Jiyeon knew James better than most. She knew he was a loser. She knew he was the nerd who sat in the back of class muttering anime lines underneath his breath while doodling inside his notebook. It was no secret to anyone that James was a bit odd, but nobody knew this better than Jiyeon.
So yeah, she knew that perhaps most people wouldn't have found it strange when he started developing a sudden fascination with the life cycles of arachnids. Or when he started disappearing from his favorite class. Or when he began showing up late to family dinners every Friday night with some ridiculous excuse about where he'd been so late at night.
But Jiyeon did.
Because James was many things: a weirdo at his core, but he wasn't a liar and definitely not a very good one. And lately, he had been lying to her a lot, which Jiyeon decided was unacceptable. And that meant that, whether James liked it or not, Jiyeon was going to figure out exactly what he was hiding from her.
Even if it killed her.
