Eve felt herself getting body slammed in every direction from the freezing current of the Thames river. Barely wanting to fight to keep herself afloat anymore, she felt a hand grasp her shoulder. The hand turned her around to face them. It was Hugo on a small boat holding his hand out to pull her aboard. Eve stared at both him and his hand blankly. The only thing she could feel or think about was the water splashing against her face and lips and imagining she could taste the iron of Villanelle's blood filling the water below her.
"Jesus. Just take my hand Eve, before you die from hypothermia."
Eve didn't move. Hugo and another MI6 member leaned over the edge of the boat and grabbed Eve by both of her arms pulling her into the boat. Like a drowned sewer rat Eve lay unmoving where she landed in the boat. Hugo flipped her to her back. Eve lie staring up at the black sky.
"Eve. Sit up and put this bloody blanket around yourself before you die." Hugo said.
Eve didn't budge so the crew sat her upright on a seat in the boat and Hugo wrapped her in the thick blanket. Then signaled to the driver to get moving. As they drove under the London bridge, Eve could see the ferry in the distance getting further away as a hundred police lights, boats and helicopter surrounded the ferry. Eve's gut wrenched, feeling helpless as they drove away from what mattered to her most. Not the ferry. Not the end of the twelve. The end of Villanelle. Somewhere lost in the black frigid water. It was impossible to believe, it was just over. After everything she lost, after everything she became and learned about herself. It didn't matter. Years of playing hide and seek with her twin flame Villanelle. They didn't get their ending. She, didn't get her ending. Eve suddenly threw up over the side of the boat. Returning to her blank position in the boat, watching everything she had left disappear.
"I'm sorry Mate." Hugo said putting his hand on her shoulder. It made a thought tickle in the back of Eve's skull but lost its momentum with the immense dread she felt. The next hour swam by in front of her in a blur as MI6 put her into an ambulance sending her off. She wanted to refuse. She wanted to get the fuck out of here, but her body didn't move.
Eve opened her eyes to the disgusting white glow of fluorescent lighting from the hospital room she woke up in. For a split moment, she wasn't aware of reality. Until as fast as that feeling came, it disappeared with that gut wrenching feeling. Eve stared masochist-ly into the white light, wondering if she stared long enough would she feel something else.
"Eve."
She blinked surprised by the voice. She didn't hear someone enter the room which told her that someone was sitting by her bedside watching her. She turned her head and saw Carolyn sitting in the bottom corner of her bedside. She immediately looked back up at the light.
"What do you want Carolyn."
"I just wanted to offer my condolences."
"Right. Don't waste your breath, I can sense how smug you are from here. You got everything you wanted and didn't even have to puppeteer or betray anyone to get it."
"Well, I don't think that's entirely fair. I told you that I would let you have this one."
"Hm. Sounds oddly suspicious to me. Almost like you knew the fate of how that would end after all the dirty work was done. That being the only reason you stepped aside and let us take it."
Eve winced after it settled in that she said 'us.'
"However the grave loss you feel you've had, this is a victory for all of us. Even for Villanelle. So take peace with that. She knew the risks and would be internally satisfied she eliminated the last of the twelve."
Eve said nothing. She wanted to puke.
"Take care of yourself Eve. She rested a hand gently on her leg, then walked out of the room."
Eve pressed the help button for the nurse. Anger welling inside her core. The nurse lightly knocked, then entered the door announcing herself.
"Mrs. Polastri, are you feeling alright? Shall I go fetch the Doctor?"
"Get me out of these wires, I'm ready to go home."
"But Mrs. Polastri—"
"Now. Or I'll rip them out myself." Eve demanded. Feeling a twinge of awkwardness by the look on the young nurse's face. But only offered,
"Please."
"Mrs. Polastri, I cannot do that, let me go get the doctor and he can discuss your release with you."
Eve's pit in her stomach grew more with anger, as she watched the nurse slip into the hallway. Immediately pulling the IV out of her arm as soon as she left, along with all the other hospital junk. She stood up feeling a little unstable, but the enrage she felt inside kept her grounded. She saw her clothes on the chair and put them on quickly, sneaking out the door and attempting a casual pace down the opposite side of the hallway the nurse went. Eve had to get the fuck out of there. But where, was the question. Still didn't care.
Eve sat at the bus stop outside her old home she shared with Niko. Feeling both anger and longing of familiarity. What was she suppose to do now? Eve did everything in her power not to let the image of Villanelle in the water with scarlet black clouds filling the space around her as she reached out as hard as she could until there was no more oxygen left.
"FUUUCKKKK." Eve screamed.
Scaring a couple walking on the other side of the road holding hands. Hesitating to either run or check if she was ok.
"Oi, are you alright ma'am?" The man asked.
"Fuck off." Eve said. Returning to her pity party.
She watched them scoff and scurry off, the woman whispering, "is that woman mental?"
Eve woke up to a horrid stench. Sitting up on the bus bench she slept on through the night, she looked around rubbing her eyes. Staring at this homeless man that was staring back at her.
"You got a cigarette?"
Eve did not answer, instead got up and started walking. She hugged her body feeling frozen down to her bones. She wasn't even paying attention to how many blocks she had walked already. She couldn't stop or else she would think of it.
"Morning Eve." Carolyn said out an open window from a black Mercedes that pulled up on the curb next to where she was walking. Eve kept walking. Carolyn signaled the driver to keep pace with Eve while she spoke.
"You made quite a dramatic exit at the hospital last night before an agent from MI6 could stop by your room and give you this." Carolyn held out her hand holding a manila folder. Eve glanced at it but kept walking.
"What about leave me the fuck alone don't you get Carolyn."
"Well, technically I would've obliged to your request if you'd stayed in your hospital room for 30 minutes after our last visit. And taken this from the agent. Yet here I am."
"I am not interested in whatever is in that folder Carolyn. It's over. And so is any form of contact between us."
Carolyn nodded to the driver to stop, and she opened the door and got out. Stepping in front of Eve.
"I respect your wishes never to see me again, but take the damn folder Eve. And start your life over however you deem necessary." She opened Eve's hand and clenched her fist to the folder and pivoted away back into the car.
Eve could feel her face turned up in disgust and annoyance. She watched the black Mercedes drive off. She opened the damn folder, because she thought what else she got to do. She found a paper with an address and a note. A small apartment located Norwich paid for the next 6 months. A small set of keys and the only other writing stating. "Restart your life, Eve." She also found a small envelope containing 20,000 euros inside. Eve rolled her eyes. She thought, 20k and 6 months of a crappy apartment. That's what all she lost was worth. That's all she got in return.
