At school in a little Devon town between the moor and the sea, Alfie knew how to disappear without going anywhere. He sat at the edge of the classroom, chose the last place in every queue, and kept his answers tucked behind his teeth. Other children made friends as easily as they traded football cards. Alfie never knew what came after hello.

He disliked surprises, steep lanes, noisy fairs, and anything beginning with, "Go on, bey, give it a try." Fun often seemed to mean doing something risky while everyone watched. Alfie preferred a proper plan and knowing exactly where his boots would land.

But every afternoon he hurried home past hedges high as walls, to the blue rug in his room and the tubs of LEGO bricks beneath his bed. Red pieces became slate roofs, grey pieces became old stone lanes, and transparent blue pieces became coves deep enough for sea monsters. When Alfie clicked the first two bricks together, the tight little world around him began to loosen.
