"Emma!? What are you trying to do?"

I pant into my phone. Summer breaks barely ended, and Emma desperately tries to ruin my life. (Yet again.)

This time she sounds pretty final.

"Look Alex, Alexandria. I don't want to go into sophomore year with a drug pusher as my best friend.."

I hear a giggle from somewhere in the background of the call. It's probably that cunt Sophie.

"Emma you started that rumor! You know it's not true. You're being a total bitch!"

I never have the gut to be loud at Emma. She's been pretty much my only friend since the seventh grade. I know she's not a great choice of company, but she's all I've got. Or I guess had.

"Wow Alexandria. First you force your drugs on me, and now you call me a bitch?" Her voice is cocky, like every sentence she says is some inside joke.

"I'm done waiting for you to act like a reasonable person. Bye." I sigh and hang up. God she pisses me off. She really pisses me off. Why the hell do I still feel like I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for her to call me back? Ask me to go Wetzel Pretzel with her, or tell me to get off my ass and start getting ready for some random guys backyard party. Parties where we get drunk out of our mind and I get reminded why I cling so tightly to Emma. Because while I sit on the curb outside the party, Emma's inside being the social butterfly she's always been.

I shut my bedroom door behind me, and walk downstairs to the kitchen to make myself an Iced coffee.

"Al, it's 7 pm. You don't need coffee."

My mom says as she walks into the room, carrying my baby brother on her hip. Her eyes are dark and tired. I glance down at her other hand. A hand that is actively carrying a coffee cup. I glare.

"Right mom. You don't need coffee at 7 pm."

I scoff and finish mixing my cup.

"Cut me a break Al. Your brothers been crying all evening. I don't need more whining from you." She set Lee down in his high chair, and grabs his mushy baby food from the fridge.

"Oh please. You love having a chaotic household so maybe dad will get back together with you out of sympathy." I put the milk away and slam the fridge door closed before I leave the room. I hear my mom scoff.

"Who the hell do you think you are Alex?!"

She shouts back at me. I look over at her, one hand on the railing of the stairs. I roll my eyes and storm back up to my room. She's only upset because she knows my words are true. As soon as I arrive back into my room I'm reminded that I have no 'To do.' It's not like I'm going to stay up calling Emma. Or like I've got some party to sneak over to.

I sit in front of my mirror and comb out my teased hair before bed.

"Six more days till school."

I mumble to myself. I get up and open my window, which leads to a ledge of roof. I climb out and sit on the roof. I gaze out at the stars dancing over the skyline of San Francisco, and twinkling between the support beams of the Golden Gate Bridge. Never shout Never faintly plays in my headphones as I finish off my iced coffee.

Six more days. I think to myself. Summer passed by like it was all one week. And only six days before my sophomore year of high school, Emma goes right ahead and unfriends me. All because of one confession.

What a bitch.
