Four Years Ago
They'd planned a quiet movie night at Erling's apartment, just the two of them—Jude had been looking forward to it all week, because he'd liked Erling so much, more than he'd ever dared say out loud. It was supposed to be their proper goodbye before Erling left for Manchester the next morning. But halfway through the film, Erling's rut hit hard and fast, turning everything hazy and out of his control. Jude stayed right there with him, because he cared too much to walk away. But when the fog lifted at sunrise, Erling couldn't remember a single thing clearly—he had no idea who had been there with him, no memory at all that it was Jude. And before Erling had even properly woken up, Jude had slipped quietly out the door, too scared to stay and face what had happened, leaving nothing behind to show he'd ever been there.
Four years later, that night is still Jude's secret—along with little Leo, his pup. He's got Erling's bouncy golden curls, only the very ends tipped dark with Jude's hair, and those same bright, clear eyes that give him away straight away. Jude has loved his pup more than anything every single day, raising him all on his own, never breathing a word to anyone about who his father really is.
They'd flown all the way out to Miami together for the World Cup, the sun warm and bright everywhere they went. The match against Norway is still three days away, but Jude knows deep down he can't avoid it forever. He's bound to bump into Erling sooner or later—probably way sooner than he's ready for. He just hopes, with everything he has, that he gets just a little bit more time before that happens.
