Darkness.
Silence.
Then...
A sharp, icy wind.
Emma was the first to stir, letting out a quiet groan as the freezing air brushed against her face. She slowly opened her eyes to a canopy of towering pine trees swaying above her. The morning sky was pale gray, and the cold bit through her clothes.
"...Troy?" she called softly.
No answer.
She quickly sat up, her heart racing.
"This... isn't Harwood County."
Leaves crunched nearby.
"Emma!"
She turned immediately.
Troy emerged from behind a cluster of trees, relief washing over his face the moment he saw her. Before either of them thought about it, Emma hurried over and hugged him tightly.
"I thought I was alone."
Troy gently rested a hand on her back.
"So did I."
Footsteps echoed from another direction.
"There you guys are!"
Jake pushed through the bushes, brushing leaves from his jacket. Behind him came Gia, Noah and Orion.
The moment all six saw each other, the tension eased.
Orion let out an exaggerated sigh.
"I was about to start naming squirrels after you."
Jake laughed.
"That's... actually believable."
Gia folded her arms.
"You always have to make things weird."
"It's a talent."
Emma smiled, grateful that despite everything, they were all together.
Noah adjusted his glasses and looked around.
"This forest definitely isn't near Harwood."
Troy nodded.
"Let's figure out where we are."
The Rangers searched the area.
There was no road.
No buildings.
No sign of civilization.
Just endless forest stretching in every direction.
Jake pulled out his communicator.
Nothing.
No signal.
No lights.
He frowned.
"Guys..."
Everyone checked theirs.
Dead.
Orion reached for his morpher.
"It won't activate."
One after another...
Every morpher remained silent.
Emma pressed hers again.
Nothing.
Gia frowned.
"Try again."
"I have."
Troy activated his.
Still nothing.
Silence.
For the first time since becoming Rangers...
They were completely powerless.
Jake forced a laugh.
"So... anyone else suddenly feeling very mortal?"
Nobody answered.
They walked for what felt like hours.
The cold grew harsher.
Emma rubbed her hands together.
"I've never felt cold like this."
Orion sneezed.
"I miss summer already."
Jake wrapped his arms around himself.
"I miss literally everything."
Gia rolled her eyes.
"We've been here for half a day."
"Exactly."
Noah suddenly stopped walking.
"Listen."
Everyone fell silent.
In the distance...
The unmistakable howl of wolves echoed through the forest.
Emma instinctively stepped closer to Troy.
Gia's eyes scanned the trees.
"That's not comforting."
Troy calmly looked around.
"We keep moving."
By late afternoon, exhaustion had begun to set in.
Their modern clothes were far too light for the northern cold.
Emma's fingers were numb.
Jake's stomach growled loudly.
"...I'm starving."
Orion looked offended.
"Your stomach growled before mine."
Even Gia chuckled.
Just then...
The sound of horses.
Everyone froze.
Branches parted.
A group of armed riders emerged from the trees, wearing thick furs and carrying long spears. Direwolf sigils decorated their cloaks.
The riders immediately surrounded the six strangers.
The leader narrowed his eyes.
"You six."
His northern accent was heavy.
"State your names."
The Rangers exchanged confused glances.
Jake whispered,
"...Anybody know what country we're in?"
The rider frowned.
"I asked you a question."
Troy took one careful step forward, keeping his hands visible.
"My name is Troy."
He gestured toward the others.
"Emma. Gia. Jake. Noah. Orion."
The soldiers looked at one another.
One muttered quietly,
"Strangest names I've ever heard."
The leader studied their unusual clothes, their unfamiliar boots, and the strange devices attached to their belts.
"You don't look like wildlings..."
"No," Troy answered honestly.
"We're... lost."
The old soldier stared at them for a long moment.
Finally, he spoke.
"If you're lying..."
He rested a hand on the hilt of his sword.
"...Lord Stark will know."
The Rangers exchanged another glance.
Noah frowned.
"Lord... Stark?"
None of them recognized the name.
The soldiers turned their horses.
"Bring them."
As the six friends followed the riders through the snowy forest, none of them noticed the massive gray direwolf watching silently from the trees before disappearing into the wilderness.
Nor did they realize that each step carried them closer to Winterfell... and into a story that had already begun long before they arrived.
