The persistent, rhythmic pinging of his phone dragged Shen Wenlang from the depths of sleep. Blinking against the sharp rays of morning sun cutting through the heavy hotel curtains, he groggily unlocked the screen. A barrage of texts from Hua Yong flooded his display.
[Lunatic]:Bastard, where the hell did you disappear to last night???!!!!!
[Lunatic]:I kept calling you all night, moron.
[Lunatic]:Answer the damn call!
Annoyed, Wenlang's thumb hovered over the keyboard to fire back a biting reply, but the sudden awareness of a soft warmth beside him made him freeze.
Slowly, carefully, he turned his head to the right.
Sleeping soundly beside him was Gao Tu. His secretary, his beta secretary was covered in a constellation of dark, unmistakable marks.
The memories of the previous night hit Wenlang like a high-speed train. The thick, suffocating sweetness of Sage. The sudden, violent triggering of his own Alpha rut. The desperate, uninhibited touches.
A wave of sheer panic surged through him, and his first instinct was to shake Tu awake to demand answers.
But as his eyes swept over the bruised, exhausted state of his secretary, a soft rustling sound broke the silence. Tu was stirring.
Adrenaline spiking, Wenlang immediately slipped back into his original position, closing his eyes and forcing his breathing into a slow, deep rhythm. He feigned sleep, keeping his senses hyper-aware.
On the other side of the bed, Gao Tu forced his eyes open.
"My whole body hurts... ugh, what happened...?" Tu internally groaned, his vision swimming. But as he turned his head and caught sight of the man lying next to him, his breath hitched in his throat.
Mr. Shen?!
The missing pieces of the puzzle violently crashed together. He had been found by Wenlang last night. His suppressed Omega heat must have leaked, triggering Wenlang's fiercely protective Alpha rut. The catastrophic state of his own body right now explained exactly how the rest of the night had played out.
Panic, cold and absolute, seized Tu's chest. A full-blown breakdown overtook him as he began to hyperventilate, tears prickling the corners of his eyes. He scrambled backward, his voice a slurred, trembling whisper of recrimination.
"Shit... shit... Mr. Shen will hate me if he finds out," Tu breathed, rocking slightly as he gripped his tangled hair. "You stupid Omega... I shouldn't have come here. I shouldn't have..."
A few feet away, Wenlang lay perfectly still, listening to every broken word. His heart ached, a heavy, suffocating weight pressing down on his chest.
Seeing Tu in such a fragile, traumatized state, Wenlang made a calculated decision: he would remain 'asleep.' He wouldn't force a confrontation now. Not until he uncovered the absolute truth about his secretary. Because the truth was, Wenlang was desperately, hopelessly in love with his best friend.
Fumbling in the dim light, Tu frantically gathered what was left of his torn, rumpled clothing. He dressed with shaking hands and slipped out of the hotel room like a ghost, desperate to vanish before his boss woke up.
Little did he know, the moment the door clicked shut, Wenlang opened his eyes-staring at the empty space beside him, his mind already spinning a web of calculations.
Two weeks flew by in a dizzying blur.
Gao Tu took a three-day medical leave to recover, which Wenlang approved without questions.
The moment he stepped back into the office, a mountain of pending paperwork swallowed him whole. Between the grueling daily operations and the high-stakes impending merger with ShengFang Biotech, Tu barely had a spare second to breathe, let alone obsess over the nightmare in the hotel room.
Wenlang, meanwhile, was operating entirely in the shadows. He pulled every string available to a billionaire CEO, turning over every stone to uncover Gao Tu's hidden identity.
The breakthrough came via an encrypted text from Hua Yong: Tu was a regular patient at an obscure medical facility called 7 Rainbow Hospital.
Without a second thought, Wenlang left the office early and drove straight there.
~ At 7 Rainbow Hospital ~
"Where can I find Dr. Jiang?" Wenlang's voice cut through the sterile air of the lobby, sharp and commanding.
The receptionist blinked, startled by the sheer gravity of the man standing before her. "Second floor, fourth room to the left, sir. Do you have an appointment?"
"No. But I need to see him immediately. It's an emergency."
Sensing the dangerous aura of an Alpha who wouldn't take no for an answer, the receptionist quickly dialed the internal line. After a brief murmur, she turned back to him. "Dr. Jiang is currently with a patient, sir. He can see you in thirty minutes. Please take a seat."
Wenlang sat in the waiting area, his sharp eyes evaluating his surroundings. He couldn't help but compare it to Heci Hospital, the ultra-luxurious, state-of-the-art medical empire. 7 Rainbow was the exact opposite: an aggressively average, unassuming clinic hidden away in a quiet corner of the city. Why would Tu come here?
Precisely thirty minutes later, Wenlang was ushered into the private office.
"Mr. Shen," Dr. Jiang said, adjusting his glasses as he looked up. "To what do I owe the pleasure of a visit from the CEO of the SH Group?"
"I'm not going to waste our time, Dr. Jiang," Wenlang said, cutting straight through the pleasantries as he sat down. "I need the medical records of your frequent patient, Gao Tu."
Dr. Jiang's expression instantly guarded over. "I'm afraid I cannot reveal any patient information, Mr. Shen. It's a strict hospital policy, and I'm sure a man of your stature understands the legalities of medical confidentiality."
For a long moment, the room was silent. Then, slowly, the rigid posture of the ruthless CEO melted away. Wenlang let down his guard entirely, discarding his pride.
"I know he's an Omega, Doctor," Wenlang confessed, his voice dropping to a vulnerable, raw register. "His heat triggered my rut two weeks ago. I love him. I have loved him for years, but he's terrified. If I want to make him feel safe enough to come to me, I need to know what he's fighting. Please."
Dr. Jiang stared at the powerful Alpha, searching his eyes for any sign of deceit. Finding only genuine, agonizing worry, the doctor sighed heavily and rubbed his temples.
"Gao Tu suffers from a severe pheromone disorder," Dr. Jiang revealed quietly. "It is the direct result of years of excessive, highly concentrated use of unprescribed inhibitors and suppressants. He has been forcefully masking his sub-gender to live as a Beta."
The words felt like a physical blow to Wenlang's chest. His heart broke for the silent agony Tu had put himself through just to stand by his side.
"And what are the consequences if he persists with this lifestyle, Doctor?" Wenlang asked, his hands clenching into tight fists on his lap.
Dr. Jiang's face grew grim, the clinical detachment fading into stark reality. "Mr. Shen, if he continues to abuse these suppressants without immediate corrective treatment, the results will be fatal. His endocrine and immune systems will completely collapse under the chemical strain. Given his current charts, he has very little time left."
Wenlang's breath hitched.
"However," Dr. Jiang continued, throwing a lifeline into the dark, "if he can find an Alpha whose biological compatibility profile matches his own, his chances of a full recovery are exponentially higher than any standard medical intervention. A compatible Alpha's scent and mating bite could literally reset his system."
Wenlang looked down at his hands, a dark, fiercely protective fire igniting beneath his grief. He knew his own compatibility. He remembered how perfectly their pheromones had locked together in that hotel room.
He wasn't going to let Gao Tu die. It was time to take control.
