Chapter One – The Girl Everyone Forgot
The village called Tiana "the abandoned child."
No one knew where her parents had gone.
Some said they had died.
Others whispered they had escaped to another country.
Some believed they simply didn't want her anymore.
Only Tiana refused to believe it.
Every evening she sat beneath the old mango tree outside her house.
She watched every stranger who walked along the dusty road.
Every time she heard footsteps, her tiny heart raced.
"Mom?"
"Dad?"
But it was never them.
Soon hunger became her closest friend.
Her little stomach growled day and night.
Sometimes she drank water just to feel full.
Sometimes she cried herself to sleep because there was nothing else she could do.
The roof leaked whenever it rained.
The wind entered through broken walls.
Cold nights wrapped around her like invisible chains.
Still...
Every morning she smiled.
Because she believed today would be the day her parents came home.
⸻
One afternoon, while searching for wild fruits, Tiana met an old woman carrying firewood.
The woman stopped.
"My child... where is your family?"
Tiana smiled.
"They're coming back."
The old woman's eyes filled with tears.
She knew they weren't.
"My name is Grandma Amara."
"And I'm Tiana."
Grandma Amara reached into her basket and handed her a small piece of sweet potato.
Tiana stared at it as though it were gold.
"For me?"
"Yes."
The little girl didn't eat immediately.
Instead, she broke the sweet potato into two pieces.
"Would you like half?"
Grandma Amara's heart broke.
This starving child was still willing to share.
"No, sweetheart."
"You eat."
Tiana slowly took a bite.
Warm tears rolled down her cheeks.
It was the first real food she had eaten in three days.
⸻
From that day, Grandma Amara visited often.
She brought beans when she had them.
Sometimes only a banana.
Sometimes nothing but stories.
At night she told Tiana tales about brave girls who became queens despite their suffering.
