Early Saturday Morning 8:00am
Location: The Curtis Family Kitchen
The Negotiation
The clanking of racket in the small Tulsa house awakened Lucille Curtis. At only eleven years old, she is still seen as the baby of the Curtis family. Since being the youngest sibling, she's been observant of others from birth no matter how much people thought she was blind.
Throwing off the covers, Lucille hit her feet to meet the cold floorboards of her bedroom. As she meets the face of her eldest brother Darrel *better known as Darry, Soda-pop lifts her off of her feet and gently says "Good Morning Lulu!".
The swift savoury smell of bacon pulls her attention to the kitchen. She took a seat at the kitchen table next to her youngest of her brothers, Pony-boy. Pony-boy looked towards her, offering a sleepy smile as he sipped orange juice. "Morning" he murmured, still half asleep.
Lucille leaned her elbows into the table and asked "Can I go down to the park after breakfast, I didn't get to the other day because of the down pour". Darry paused, holding the pan mid-air to put eggs on each of the plates. A heavy sigh escaped him, he then shared a quick, tense look with Soda-pop, who had just sat down to eat.
"The park Lucille?" Darry asked, his voice soft but cautious.
"I'm not too sure kid, things have been tense around those parts. I'd feel better if you stayed closer to home."
Lucille sighed heavily, "The Socs never ever go down that way so early in the morning and besides if I go now, the playground will be entirely empty. I'll be back before lunch, long before the Socs even turn on our street". Darry stood frozen, looking at his little sister realizing she was right. He laughed and shook his head.
"You're too smart for your own good kiddo" Darry muttered with a hint of pride. "Fine. But you better take the long way around, stay away from the main road, and if you see some car you don't recognize. You better run back here, you hear me?" Lucille grinned with gratitude.
