The first time I saw Zara, she was standing under the old mango tree at the end of our street with her hands folded across her chest. The evening sun painted the sky orange, and the dusty road shimmered from the day's heat. Children ran past laughing, women bargained loudly at roadside stalls, and motorcycles buzzed through the neighborhood.

Yet somehow, she stood still, watching everything like she was searching for something she had lost.

I had lived on Unity Street for almost five years, so I knew almost everyone around. Every face was familiar, every family had a story, but I had never seen hers before.

"Who's the new girl?" I asked my younger brother as we walked home from the football field.

He looked over.

"Oh... that's the family that just rented Mr. Bello's apartment."

"Really?"

"They came yesterday."

I nodded without saying another word, but my eyes kept drifting back toward her.

She looked confident, but there was sadness hidden behind her smile.

Little did I know that meeting her would change my life forever.

The next morning, I was sweeping the front of our compound when I heard someone say,

"Good morning."

I looked up.

It was her.

She wore a simple blue T-shirt, black leggings, and white sneakers. Her curly hair was tied into a neat ponytail.

"Morning," I replied.

She smiled warmly.

"I'm Zara."

"I'm Daniel."

"I know."

"You know my name?"

She laughed softly.

"My little brother has already made friends with everyone on this street."

I couldn't help laughing too.

"So... welcome."

"Thank you."

There was an awkward silence before she pointed toward the nearby shop.

"Is there a place around here where I can buy bread?"

I smiled.

"Come on. I'll show you."
