part 1
The forest had fallen silent.
Not the peaceful silence that accompanied the end of an ordinary battle, but the suffocating stillness left behind when something far beyond comprehension had passed through.
Towering trees that had stood for decades lay scattered across the ground like broken matchsticks. Deep gouges scarred the earth where giant snakes had torn through the undergrowth, uprooting everything in their path. Branches still rained from above, dislodged by the sheer force of the battle, while clouds of dust drifted lazily through the shafts of fading sunlight.
The air itself felt heavy.
Almost... poisonous.
Sakura stood frozen amidst the devastation, her breathing ragged as she desperately tried to steady the violent pounding of her heart. Every muscle in her body screamed at her to move, yet her legs refused to obey. They trembled beneath her weight, threatening to give out at any moment.
What... what was that...?
She had faced enemy ninja before.
The Demon Brothers, Zabuza who was known as the demon of hidden mist.
Those encounter had been terrifying in its own right, but This... This had been something entirely different.
The person hadn't fought them, who ever the disguised grass ninja was has mearly played with them like a predator plays with their prey.
The realization settled like ice in her stomach.
Every attack Team Seven had launched had been brushed aside with effortless ease. Every carefully planned strategy had crumbled before it even began. The gap between them had been so vast that calling it a battle almost felt insulting.
They had never stood a chance.
A low groan pulled her attention away.
"S-Sasuke..."
The dark-haired boy had fallen to one knee several meters away, one hand clutching the side of his neck so tightly that his fingers had turned white. His entire body shook violently as though he were desperately fighting against something invisible.
Slowly, Sasuke began to lose his composure.
"No..." Sakura whispered, taking an uncertain step toward him.
Sasuke's breathing became erratic. His fingers dug into the soil beneath him.
His jaw clenched so tightly she thought his teeth might shatter. He was fighting a losing battle with himself, he was losing his consciousness.
She rushed forward.
Before she could reach him, a blur of orange shot past her.
His face was bruised, dirt streaked across his clothes, and blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. Yet he didn't hesitate.
"Sakura!" he shouted.
He stood between her and the snake freak.
For one brief moment, Sakura simply stared.
Naruto...
He was protecting her, Even in his current state he was protecting his teammates, He simply stepped in front of her as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
A warmth flickered within her chest.
It vanished almost instantly, The air behind them shifted. A killing intent so overwhelming crashed down upon them that Sakura's lungs forgot how to breathe.
