"There is no coming to consciousness without pain.
People will do anything, no matter how absurd,
in order to avoid facing their own Soul.
One does not become enlightened
by imagining figures of light,
but by making the darkness conscious."
-Carl Jung
Persephonia returned to the Realm of Souls still simmering with indignation. Her human slept quietly, a perfect opportunity for her own repose, yet rest eluded her, chased away by the fire of her frustration. She bypassed the serene gardens entirely, making her way directly to the hallowed administration halls, determined to see Mother.
The alabaster edifice loomed before her, its polished surfaces glowing softly, as though the very building exhaled serenity. Inside, the world was an unbroken expanse of white: walls, floors, ceiling, even the furnishings and the carefully tended plants radiated a purity meant to soothe the spirit. Yet for Persephonia, peace remained stubbornly out of reach.
At the massive double doors of Mother's chamber, the guardian stood sentinel, an immovable sentinel carved from calm itself.
"Do you have an appointment, Persephonia?" his voice was measured, unwavering.
"No," she said sharply. "But I must see Mother, now."
"She is occupied. You know the rules. One must schedule an audience."
"This is different. She will see me. I will wait here until she does."
"Persephonia, this is not "
The doors swung open before he could finish, and Mother stepped through. Radiance seemed to flow from her like sunlight across still water: long silken hair, eyes pale blue yet luminous against skin as ivory as the halls themselves. Her gown floated around her in mist like waves, arms bare yet strong, graceful. She smiled as she took Persephonia's hand in hers.
"My child," she said, voice gentle as a lullaby, "I felt your anger the instant you crossed the threshold of this realm. Come. I will make time for you."
Persephonia cast a mischievous glance at the guardian, sticking out her tongue in defiance. He tightened his jaw but offered no reply as she followed Mother inside.
The chamber was vast; the walls lined with windows where clouds drifted lazily through a sky of silver and pearl. The room's whiteness softened here into inviting comfort: plush sofas, low tables, a space that welcomed one to sink deep and forget time.
Mother gestured for her to sit, and as if by magic, a tea set appeared. She poured a cup of chamomile and extended it to Persephonia.
"For you, child. It will calm your spirit."
"I do not need tea, Mother," Persephonia replied, accepting the cup but leaving it untouched. "I need this cycle to end. Why must it always be the same struggle? My human, she resists at every turn. I cannot succeed with such obstinance."
"She is not obstinate, Persephonia," Mother said softly. "Her path is chosen, and you know how carefully we select each human. Their journey is never easy. It is your task to illuminate her way."
"As if it were simple! The world grows darker, more obstinate with each passing age. How am I to awaken one who refuses to see?"
"Yes," Mother admitted, her voice a caress. "Many Chosen Ones falter; many guides struggle. But do not falter yourself. I trust you. I trust her. She is stronger than you know. Believe in her. Guide her. You are the spark that will awaken her light."
