I was three when I met Liam Heinz. He was the only kid who didn't care that I was upper class, that i was sick. I still remember exactly how we met.
I just started getting sick last year. I always had a fever, but never a cough, none of those icky, snotty symptoms. I could never run with the others, I didn't have too much energy. There was really no telling why my mom even brought me with her. But I'm glad she did.
Liam was always with the other kids, though. Laughing, smiling, playing. He was a happy child who played nonstop.
I don't know what it was that made him finally notice me. I always sat in the corner of the playroom, usually with a box of blocks. He waddled over one day, offering me a ball. I didn't want to talk to him, didn't think he'd like me. He went away, but came back the very next day. He did this for an entire week.
Finally, he realized all I wanted to do was sit in the corner and play with my blocks. So, he sat in the corner before I go there. When my mom dropped me off in the playroom, I rushed to my corner. He was there, smiling and playing with my blocks. I didn't know what to do, so I just ignored him and went about my business.
He kept it up, waiting till the third day to actually tell me his name. He was so sweet, never once getting mad when I didn't talk to him. I didn't feel like he would want to stay my friend since i was sick. But he stayed. And after a while, I talked back.
He became my best friend. Over the years we grew so close, neither class or health mattered to us. It was just him and me against everything.
I thought he would surely leave me when i became bedridden. I couldn't go out and play anymore, couldn't get into any more trouble with him. He surprised me by even staying through that. For as long as he could anyway.
