Chapter 1: The Assignment
"Write about the person who knows you best."
Yana Hawthorne stared at the words written across the whiteboard.
Around her, pens immediately started moving.
"My mom," someone whispered.
"My brother," another student said.
Mrs. Carter smiled as she walked around the classroom.
"Remember, class. This isn't about who you love the most. It's about who truly knows you."
Yana tapped her pen against her notebook.
The answer should have been easy.

Her father had always been her favorite person.

Then disappeared.
Would Dad know her favorite color?
It used to be purple.
Now it was sage green.
Would he know?
What about her favorite song?
Her biggest fear?
Her dream university?
The questions made her uncomfortable.
The bell rang.
Students rushed toward the door.
Yana closed her notebook.
The page was still blank.
That evening she walked through the front door and dropped her bag beside the stairs.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
"Dad?"
No answer.
Yelena appeared from the kitchen.
"Business dinner."
Of course.
Yana nodded.
She wasn't surprised anymore.
That was the worst part.
