God told her that’s what she was there for and to stop complaining.
She told him to fuck off.
Gage had been so very proud of her.
Eventually they fizzled out though, neither having particularly planned on making whatever they had together permanent- Death had just as wandering an eye as Gage did- and they split amicably. But never did she try to repair her relationship with God, liking the free agent that she was once again.
He supposed they were friends as they still had an affable rapport with the other when they crossed paths. And not that Death was about to go running to Lucifer and tell him Gage saved a soul. But Lucifer’s power came from those condemned to hell, and when one was on its way he could feel that shift in his power. He would have felt that increase- however minute he would- and he would have noticed when it waned. Then he would ask questions.
Though she might not greet every soul, inside Death’s head was a list of every soul that had passed into the afterlife. She knew the how’s and why’s of their deaths and where they were headed once judged of every soul, meaning Lucifer would only have to ask and she could tell him that he lost Sera’s soul because Gage saved her.
And as Death hopped her cute little butt up on top of the table he knew there was no getting rid of her.
But what could he say, how could he explain the thoughtless action he committed that saved the life of the one soul he shouldn’t have, the one he was responsible his self for bringing before Lucifer.
They both got their answer when Sera shifted in his arms, her arms wrapping around his waist as she curled herself closer into him.
He shot worried eyes to Death as Sera pressed her face into his chest, seeking a deeper comfort from him.
“You’ve grown attached to her haven’t you?” Death asked in disbelief.
He would have loved to have shaken his head no, but he couldn’t. Instead he dropped his eyes to the floor, seeing the empty syringe there and wondering what the hell he was going to do.
Because she was right and it was so bad news for him. Being attracted to Sera was one thing, but being attached meant affection was involved too, feelings for fuck’s sake.
He leaned his head atop Sera’s feeling something he never had in his life, defeat.
He had been defeated because he had formed some sort of bond to this mortal. When though, when had this moved from simple curiosity to an infatuation? Even getting on the train this morning he was determined to take care of what he needed to, excited even because he had solved yet another case. Yes he wanted to solve her too but…but he had made amends with himself that he couldn’t, hadn’t he? He knew there was no point if she was very well going to end up on the end of his blade.
But didn’t he think that every time he walked away from her? That it would be so easy to do his duty… but once he was back in her presence he couldn’t help but want to know her, to want her.
He couldn’t believe those thoughts hadn’t crossed his mind yet with her practically naked in his lap. There were just a couple of scraps of fabric covering what he knew would be the most exquisite parts of her. A couple of bits keeping him from being inside her…now why in the hell did he feel utterly guilt ridden for thinking of her in that way? He hadn’t felt bad earlier when he had her trapped against that wall, when she licked her lips he could only imagine that tongue flicking out like that on another part of him… again that shame washed over him and he squeezed her tighter.
