It was 5:30 a.m. as I stood in the empty firehouse, reflecting on all the hurdles I had overcome to be here. To be home. Life felt good.
I slipped my headphones over my ears and grabbed the hose to start cleaning the engines. I enjoyed coming in early to clean them. Lately, I haven't been sleeping much. I couldn't really tell you why. Life has been great, but I can't help feeling like something's missing. But I don't know what.

I decided to shake off my thoughts and just get lost in the music.

"Da da-da da da," I sang along as I danced around, getting lost in the music and almost forgetting about the hose in my hand.

I took a deep breath as I straightened my jacket. Here's to a new chapter.

I looked up at the firehouse and took a step forward to find the captain. A sprinkle of water splashing against my face and chest pulled me away from my nerves. My eyes drifted to the source of the water.

They landed on a rather attractive young man who was dancing and singing while, I assumed, trying to clean the trucks. He noticed me, stumbling to a stop and freezing in place. I smiled and did a little boogie to reassure the young firefighter that there was nothing to be embarrassed about.

He smirked and returned the gesture with a little boogie of his own.

The next thing we knew, we were dancing while he sang along to the song. But when the music came to an end, the man seemed to regain his sense of reality and scampered back into the firehouse to put the hose away.

The last few minutes had certainly left me confused, but also intrigued. Could this be the start of a new adventure?

I didn't stick around to see where the firefighter went. After all, I was here to see the captain.
I knocked on the door before entering the office.
"Captain Nash?" I asked as I shut the door behind me.

"You must be Edmundo Diaz. Please, have a seat," he said, gesturing toward the chair opposite him.

"It's Eddie," I said with a smile, taking the seat.

The song ended, and so did the moment.

What was I doing?

The strange man looked at me, and all of a sudden, I found myself getting nervous around him. I quickly grabbed the hose and hastily headed into the firehouse to put it away and start getting ready for my shift.

Before heading up the stairs, I glanced back over my shoulder, but the strange man was gone. Had I dreamed that? Maybe I should see someone about my lack of sleep, I thought to myself as I continued my ascent to the kitchen.

Bobby was going to teach me how to make his famous waffles for everyone to have for breakfast.

Ten minutes later, I had finished getting out everything we would need to make breakfast when Bobby walked up the stairs.

"Morning, kid," the older man said with a smile. "Ready for today's lesson?"

He always seemed so happy and eager to teach me how to cook. It was honestly so comforting to have finally found that father figure.

We began dishing up breakfast as the team slowly started arriving and taking their seats, eagerly grabbing their plates along the way.
