The village of Ogidi was small, quiet, and forgotten by most of the world.
The dusty roads stretched between old mud houses, and every evening the villagers returned home before darkness swallowed the land.
Among them lived a sixteen-year-old girl named Ayoka.
She wasn't an orphan.
Ayoka's parents worked harder than anyone she knew, yet there was never enough. Her father returned home each evening with tired eyes and aching feet, while her mother stretched every coin to keep food on the table. Their small house creaked with age, and when rain fell, buckets lined the floor to catch the leaks. Despite their struggles, they loved Ayoka with all they had.
Her parents were alive and loved her deeply.
Yet loneliness followed her everywhere.
Her father,Alabi, spent his days working on a farm that barely earned enough money to feed the family.
Her mother,Alake, sold vegetables in the market from sunrise until nightfall.
Most days Ayoka was alone.
At school she sat at the back of the classroom.
The other students rarely spoke to her.
Some believed she was strange.
Others simply ignored her.
After years of rejection, Ayoka stopped trying to make friends.
Books became her escape.
Stories became her companions.
One rainy evening, she sat beside her bedroom window reading an old novel.
Thunder rumbled in the distance.
The wind howled outside.
The electricity suddenly went out.
Darkness filled the room.
Ayoka groaned and reached for a candle.
Before she could light it, she heard something.
A faint sound.
A whisper.
"Ayoka..."
She froze😨.
The voice was soft, almost impossible to hear.
Her eyes scanned the room.
Nobody was there.
She swallowed hard.
Perhaps she imagined it.
The rain grew heavier.
Then the whisper returned.
"Ayoka..."
This time it sounded closer.
Much closer.
Fear tightened in her chest.
"Who's there?" she asked.
No answer came.
Only silence.
Ayoka grabbed the candle and lit it with trembling hands.
The tiny flame illuminated the room.
Everything appeared normal.
The bed.
The chair.
The old bookshelf.
Nothing seemed out of place.
Then she noticed something strange.
The mirror above her dresser.
A dark shadow moved across its surface.
Ayoka gasped.
She spun around.
Nobody stood behind her.
Slowly she turned back toward the mirror.
The shadow was gone.
Her heart pounded wildly.
The storm outside intensified.
Lightning flashed across the sky.
For a brief second, the room was flooded with white light.
And in that instant, she saw a figure standing beside her reflection.
A tall dark figure.
Its face hidden beneath darkness.
Ayoka screamed.
The candle slipped from her hand.
When she looked again, the figure had vanished.
She backed away from the mirror.
"What do you want from me?" she whispered.
The room became ice cold.
a voice echoed from the darkness.
A voice that did not sound human.
"I've been waiting for you."
The candle flame suddenly went out.
And something unseen grabbed her shoulder.
