Ava couldn't stop smiling.
For the first time in months, she felt hopeful.
Leaving her previous company had been one of the hardest decisions she'd ever made. The endless office politics, the constant stress, and the feeling of being targeted every day had drained her completely.
But that chapter of her life was over.
At least, that's what she'd convinced herself.
After weeks of interviews and uncertainty, she'd finally landed a position at one of the most respected corporate intelligence firms in the state.
A fresh start.
A new environment.
A chance to breathe again.
The department chief led her down a bright hallway lined with glass offices and polished floors.
"Welcome to the team, Ava," he said warmly. "We're excited to have you on board."
"Thank you, sir."
He smiled and pushed open a door.
"This will be your office."
Ava stepped inside.
The space was larger than she'd expected.
Two desks.
Floor-to-ceiling windows.
A small conference table in the corner.
One of the desks was already occupied.
The man sitting there didn't immediately look up.
He was focused on something on his computer.
The chief continued speaking.
"You'll be working directly under our Senior Field Operations Manager. He's one of our best investigators and oversees most of our high-priority assignments."
Ava nodded politely.
Then the man lifted his head.
Her world stopped.
No.
Her breath caught in her throat.
No.
No, no, no.
Her stomach dropped so fast she thought she might be sick.
What the hell is he doing here?
John Donald.
The same sharp jawline.
The same unreadable eyes.
The same calm expression that had haunted her for years.
The same man she'd spent months trying to forget.
The same man who had made every day at her previous company feel like a battlefield.
The same man she'd blamed for her resignation.
Ava barely heard the chief continue.
"This is John Donald. He joined us recently and he'll be your direct supervisor."
Supervisor?
Her pulse exploded.
No.
