"weed."
"yeah."
"ugh, i wish we had some." steve threw his head back. he was sitting on the floor of jonathan's room, leaning back on the palms of his hands which were gripping the carpet. one of his jeaned knees was bent, and the other leg was streched forward.
"yeah." jonathan said again. they were listening to a cassette. it was just starting to get dark outside. "sometimes i wish you still hung out with tommy and the guys because of that." he said truthfully and lowered his gaze to the floor.
steve actually laughed. "yeah, fuck me, right?" he joked. "what about you, you artsy fuck, i thought you guys were supposed to do all kinds of drugs."
jonathan knitted his eyebrows at the stereotypical generalization.
steve spoke again. "oh, i forgot, you don't have any friends." steve started laughing before he finished what he thought was the most cliche joke of all time. he would have been embarrassed to say it in front of someone who wouldn't have figured he was saying it sarcastically, but jonathan knew his sense of humor.
"oh my god." jonathan cringed. he fake laughed and slapped his knee. steve was still dying laughing.
"i still think it's more of a popular crowd thing." jonathan said seriously.
"you're trying to get in." steve barely got the words out, adding to the joke.
"fucking stop laughing at your own joke!" jonathan said, now laughing as well, at the absurdity of the situation, not realizing why steve thought this was so funny. he was probably very tired, you know the kind, when everything's funny?
"fine, fine, sorry." steve was red in the face and had tears in his eyes. "but i know who i could ask." he said, catching his breath and pushing his now disheveled hair out of his face. he wiped his eyes.
"who?" jonathan asked with a confused face.
"hargrove." steve said flatly.
"really?" jonathan tilted his head. "i didn't know you guys were cool." his eyebrows were raised.
"nah." steve scrunched his face. "i just know he deals."
jonathan just looked at him, wanting for steve to elaborate.
steve looked up at him when he noticed the silence. "what? that's it."
"well, how do you know that?"
"someone said it, jonathan, i don't know... i mean, what else do you think he could be doing in his spare time?" steve was starting to get a bit irritated.
"so you don't know?" jonathan still wasn't fully getting steve.
"why would someone make that up?" steve paused. "look, do you want weed or not?" he finished.
"yes, oh my god, can i not a question?"
"you asked five hundred." steve exhaled. "look, i know he deals. people at school talked about it and i've seen him do it. i'll ask him tomorrow and that's all i can tell you right now."
