The Karahan mansion no longer smelled of gunpowder or resentment. Now, the prevailing aroma was that of freshly brewed coffee and the jasmine that Mercan took care of personally. Three months had passed since the truth about Eylül had exploded, changing the course of their lives forever.
However, changing the name on legal documents had been simpler than changing the name in Demet's soul. She still preferred that name; Eylül felt to her like a girl made of glass who belonged to Ateş's memories, while Demet was the woman who had survived the blows.
Ateş sat on the terrace, watching Demet. She walked through the garden, pausing to touch the leaves with an almost fearful delicacy. He wanted to run to her, embrace her, and reclaim the twenty lost years in a single second, but he knew that a sudden movement could make her flinch by instinct.
--It's going to take time, Ateş,-- Mercan whispered, appearing at his side and naturally wrapping her arms around his waist.
Ateş sighed, resting his head against his wife's. His relationship with Mercan was at its peak; the arrival of his sister had not pulled them apart, but rather united them in a mission of love.
--I know, my life. But it hurts to see how she tenses up when I enter a room. I'm her brother, Mercan. I don't want her to be afraid of me.--
--She isn't afraid of you,-- Mercan corrected him, giving him a soft kiss on the cheek. --She is afraid of authority figures. To her, a strong man was always synonymous with danger. You have to teach her that your strength is her shield, not her executioner.--
In the garden, Cemal approached Demet. He didn't interrupt her; he simply walked by her side in silence until she looked up and smiled at him shyly.
--Ateş is watching you from above,-- Cemal remarked with a knowing smile.
Demet looked toward the terrace and saw her brother. She quickly lowered her gaze.
--Sometimes I feel like he expects me to run to him and call him 'Tahir,' like in the photos. But when I look at him, I can only think of how much I resemble the people who made him suffer.--
Cemal stopped and took her hand. The connection between them was undeniable, a burning attraction simmering on a low flame, yet one they both respected with sacred patience.
--You are not the Keseroğlus, Demet. You are the reason he keeps fighting.--
Cemal looked deep into her eyes. He had a ring tucked away in his office for weeks, but he knew that before officially claiming Demet's heart, he had to honor the new hierarchy of the house. In his mind, he was already planning the moment he would sit before Ateş and ask for permission to formalize what was already a fact in their souls.
Later, in the living room, a small miracle occurred. Ateş was reading some reports when Demet entered to look for a book. He set the papers aside and, breaking his own rule of maintaining distance, called out to her.
--Demet... would you like to see this?-- he said, pointing to an old photo album of their mother that he had rescued from a safety deposit box.
Demet hesitated, but seeing Mercan nodding sweetly from the sofa, she approached. She sat on the opposite end of the couch, maintaining a prudent space. Ateş opened the album and showed her a photo of a woman with light eyes and a bright smile.
--It's our mother,-- Ateş said softly. --You have her same way of tilting your head when you think.--
Demet extended a trembling finger and touched the photograph. For the first time in her life, she didn't feel the urge to flee from a memory.
--She's... she's beautiful.--
Ateş seized the moment and, very carefully, placed his hand over hers. Demet tensed for a second, her breathing quickening, but she did not pull her hand away. She looked at Ateş and saw, not the fearsome leader of the Karahans, but the boy who once promised her through the bars of a cell that everything would be alright.
--Thank you... brother,-- she whispered.
The word "brother" echoed in the room like a symphony. Ateş felt a part of his burden lift. Mercan, observing from a distance, took Ateş's hand from the other side, closing the circle.
