Mallory was slowly becoming depressed. Her mother passed only a week apart from her grandmother and unfortunately she felt like she was next. Although that's how she felt, she knew it wouldn't happen because that's not what her mother nor grandmother would want for her. They'd want her to live on and be happy without them since they raised her to be strong. Her mother and grandmother raised her by themselves, just them and she looked up to them for that but at times she wondered how her father and grandfather were. They passed away a month before Mallory was born by a drunk driver. Everyone was in the car, but only they passed. Mallory's mother said it was a miracle herself and her mother survived, thought it was destined after getting over the heartache. Fortunately for Mallory, her online existence made her a new friend, Tish. Tish lived in Arizona, invited Mallory over for the summer and Mallory couldn't say no.

Gus just moved to Arizona, chasing his dreams of becoming a paramedic. He had six months left before he graduated. Gus was married before he started school but unfortunately his wife passed. She passed during laboring their son whom Gus didn't get the chance to meet. Gus and his wife had the option to never even go through with the pregnancy because of that possibility but his wife insisted. Although he didn't agree at first, he fell in love with his boy. Fell in love with his wife all over again. It's been three years since their passing and he's healed here and there. Gus's motivation is his late wife and son. He always imagined taking his son to the fire station and having him gear up in the firefighter suite, experiencing the firely love. He still holds onto that image.
