ZNG. ZNG. ZNG. ZNG.

Kairo groaned.

The alarm was relentless.

ZNG. ZNG. ZNG.

Five more minutes.

He blindly reached toward his nightstand.

His hand hit something soft.

There was a startled squeak.

Something flew through the air.

Kairo frowned.

"...Huh?"

The alarm stopped.

Silence settled over him.

For a few seconds, he simply lay there with his eyes closed.

Then a breeze brushed across his face.

A breeze.

Kairo's apartment didn't have a breeze.

His bedroom barely had ventilation.

Slowly, he opened one eye.

Blue.

An endless blue sky stretched overhead.

Kairo stared.

His brain refused to process what he was seeing.

"...What?"

He sat up.

Dirt.

Rocks.

Dry yellow grass.

No ceiling.

No walls.

No apartment.

No bed.

Kairo blinked several times.

The scenery stubbornly remained the same.

His heart began beating faster.

"Okay."

He took a deep breath.

"Okay."

Another breath.

"I am either dreaming..."

His gaze shifted.

"...or I am about to have the worst day of my life."

There was a body lying a short distance away.

A corpse.

The smell hit him a second later.

Rot.

Blood.

Decay.

Kairo immediately wished he hadn't looked.

The corpse looked humanoid.

At least partly.

Torn flesh exposed white bone beneath.

Dark stains covered the surrounding dirt.

Something small crawled through the remains.

His stomach lurched.

His eyes widened.

His gaze dropped downward.

Two legs lay several feet away.

Kairo froze.

The world froze with him.

His brain made a connection.

A very stupid connection.
