Chapter 1: The Game That Started It All
The first time I downloaded Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, it wasn’t because I loved games. It was because I loved watching people play them—especially him.
Everyone on campus knew Adrian Reyes.
Basketball captain. Confident smile. The kind of guy professors remembered and girls whispered about in hallways.
And then there was me.
A girl most people barely noticed.
Quiet. Always sitting near the window in class. The one with glasses and a notebook full of doodles instead of conversations.
Making friends had always felt like trying to join a conversation already halfway finished. I never knew when to speak.
So instead, I watched.
And sometimes… I imagined.
One afternoon in the campus cafeteria, I overheard his friends talking.
“Bro, hurry tonight. Rank push tayo sa Mobile Legends.”
Adrian laughed. “Relax. I’ll carry you guys again.”
My heart did a strange little flip.
That night, I downloaded the game.
Not because I was good at gaming.
Not because I even understood what “rank push” meant.
But because maybe—just maybe—I could exist in the same world he did.
My username was simple:
StarlightDream
It sounded less awkward than my real name.
I played badly at first. My character kept dying, my teammates complained, and I accidentally used my ultimate skill on nothing more than jungle monsters.
But I kept playing.
Night after night.
Match after match.
Until one evening, something unexpected happened.
Match Found.
Five players.
My hands froze when I saw one of the usernames.
AReyes23
No way.
It couldn’t be him.
Right?
But when the match started, his hero moved with the kind of confidence I had seen only once before—on the big screen during campus esports night.
My heart was pounding like I was the one running across the battlefield.
Halfway through the game, I accidentally saved him.
An enemy hero jumped from the bushes.
Without thinking, I used my skill.
Stun.
Shield.
Escape.
Adrian’s hero survived.
A few seconds later, a message popped up in team chat.
AReyes23:
“Nice save.”
I stared at the screen for a full five seconds.
Then typed back, hands shaking.
StarlightDream:
“Just lucky.”
After the match ended, a notification appeared.
Friend Request Received.
From: AReyes23
I sat there frozen, my heart beating faster than the victory music.
The campus crush…
The guy I admired from across lecture halls…
Had just added me.
And he had no idea that the quiet girl who watched him from the back row…
Was the same girl who had just become his gaming partner.
Or that soon…
He would start calling her his virtual girlfriend.
