What makes us humans?

What makes us human? Speak—what fragile claim is ours?
What quiet mark survives these vanishing hours?
What thread is spun within our fleeting breath,
that dares to whisper still in the face of death?

Is it the motion, this restless, wandering grace?
Yet beasts outrun us in the endless race.
The rivers surge, the falcon splits the sky—
no step we take, no leap, no soaring cry
is ours alone; the wild has known it first,
in claw and tide, in instinct's ancient thirst.

Is it the mind, this flickering, thinking flame?
Yet crafted minds now rival us the same.
They learn our patterns, echo what we know,
outpace our reach with tireless, perfect flow.
No doubt, no dream, no wonder slows their art—
and still, no trembling stirs within their heart.

Alas, not these—nor motion, nor the mind;
for both are gifts the world has long defined.
Then what remains, when all is stripped away?
What fragile truth refuses to decay?

It is the way we break, yet dare to mend,
to lose ourselves—and still begin again.
A quiet strength no flawless form can show,
that blooms the brightest where the deepest wounds grow.

It is ambition—restless, reaching flame,
that dares the stars, yet trembles all the same.
To crave the infinite, to rise, to try—
yet falter, asking softly... who am I?

It is in love—not simple, nor confined,
but fierce enough to fracture and to bind.
To give, though loss stands waiting close behind,
to hold, yet know we leave it all in time.

It is in kindness—soft, defiant light,
that stands unarmed before the teeth of night.
To choose another's ache above our own,
and plant a seed where none had once been sown.

It is in hope, that stubborn, fragile art,
a quiet rebellion burning in the heart.
A flicker small—yet daring to defy
the endless silence pressing from the sky.

It is the story we insist—
that meaning lives where none exists.
We name the stars, we chase the sky,
we ask not how—but who am I?

So not in motion, nor in mind,
but in the truths we cannot bind—
in love, in loss, in dreams we try...
we are the question called why.
