Chapter 1: The Rejection

The Blood Moon hung low over Ironridge, painting the desert canyon in shades of crimson and shadow. Selene Voss had dreamed of this night since she was old enough to understand what it meant to be wolf.

The Claiming Ceremony.

The night when fated mates would feel the pull of destiny, when the moon goddess would reveal the other half of their souls.

She stood at the edge of the ceremonial circle, her heart hammering against her ribs. Around her, hundreds of pack members gathered on the red sandstone cliffs, their eyes reflecting the bloody moonlight. Torches flickered in the warm desert wind, casting dancing shadows across weathered faces.

Selene smoothed down her white ceremonial dress—the one her mother had worn, before the fever took her. The fabric was thin from years of careful storage, but it was all she had left of the woman who'd promised her that one day, she would find her mate.

"You look beautiful," whispered Nadia Ashford, squeezing her hand. The Alpha's sister had been Selene's only friend in a pack that looked down on orphaned Omegas with no family name to speak of.

"I'm terrified," Selene admitted.

"Don't be." Nadia's amber eyes sparkled with mischief. "I have a feeling tonight is going to change everything."

A hush fell over the crowd as the Alpha emerged from the main lodge. Not the old Alpha—he had died three months ago, his heart giving out after decades of leading the pack. This was his son.

Rhett Ashford.

Selene's breath caught in her throat.

She had seen him before, of course. Everyone in Ironridge knew the Alpha's heir—tall and broad-shouldered, with dark hair that fell across his forehead and eyes the color of desert amber. He moved like a predator, all coiled power and dangerous grace.

But tonight, under the Blood Moon, something was different.

The moment his gaze swept across the crowd and landed on her, Selene felt it.

A hook behind her navel. A thread of fire connecting her chest to his. Her wolf—usually so quiet, so submissive—suddenly surged forward with a howl of recognition.

Mate. Mate. MATE.

The word echoed through every cell of her body. She saw Rhett's eyes widen, saw his nostrils flare as he caught her scent. His wolf was there, just beneath the surface, and it was looking at her like she was the answer to every question he'd ever asked.

For one perfect moment, Selene believed in fairy tales.

Then Rhett's expression shuttered.

He turned away from her, his jaw tight, and walked to the center of the ceremonial circle. The pack parted before him like water before a ship's prow.

"Tonight," he announced, his voice carrying across the canyon, "we honor the traditions of our ancestors. The Blood Moon reveals our fated bonds. Those who feel the pull will step forward and claim their mates."

Selene's legs were moving before she could think. The pull was irresistible—a gravitational force that demanded she close the distance between them. She was vaguely aware of whispers erupting around her, of shocked faces and pointed fingers.

An Omega? Approaching the Alpha?

She didn't care. The bond was singing in her blood, and nothing else mattered.

She stopped three feet from Rhett, looking up into those amber eyes. Up close, she could see the tension in his shoulders, the white-knuckled grip of his fists at his sides.

"I feel it," she whispered, too low for anyone else to hear. "You feel it too. I know you do."

Something flickered in his gaze. Pain. Longing. And then—

Nothing.

His eyes went cold.

"Selene Voss," he said, loud enough for the entire pack to hear. "You dare approach me?"

The words hit her like a physical blow. She stumbled back a step. "I—the bond—"

"There is no bond." His voice was ice. "You are an Omega. Orphaned. Nameless. You have nothing to offer this pack, and you have nothing to offer me."

The whispers became a roar. Selene heard laughter—cruel, mocking laughter—from somewhere in the crowd. Her cheeks burned with humiliation.

"But I felt—"

"You felt nothing." Rhett stepped closer, and his scent washed over her—pine and smoke and something wild. Her wolf whimpered, reaching for him even as his words tore her apart. "Whatever delusion you've constructed, end it now. I will never take an Omega as my mate. I will never take you."

Tears blurred her vision. "Rhett, please—"

"I, Rhett Ashford, Alpha of Ironridge Pack—" His voice rang out across the canyon, formal and final. "—reject you, Selene Voss, as my fated mate."

The bond snapped.

Selene screamed—a raw, animal sound that echoed off the canyon walls and silenced every wolf in attendance.

It felt like someone had reached into her chest and ripped out her heart with bare hands, like molten silver was being poured into the hollow where her soul used to live. She collapsed to her knees on the cold stone, gasping for air that wouldn't come. Her wolf howled in agony, thrashing against the walls of her mind.

Through the haze of pain, she saw Rhett's face. For just a moment—a fraction of a second—she thought she saw something crack in his expression. Regret. Horror. Like he hadn't expected it to hurt this much.

Then he turned his back on her.

"The ceremony continues," he announced to the pack. "Those with legitimate bonds may step forward."

Selene knelt in the dirt, shaking, as the pack moved around her like she was invisible. No one helped her up. No one even looked at her.

Except Nadia, who was fighting through the crowd with tears streaming down her face. "Selene! Selene, I'm so sorry, I didn't know he would—"

But Selene couldn't hear her. Couldn't hear anything except the echo of those words.

I reject you.

A sharp pain lanced through her abdomen—different from the bond-break, deeper somehow. She pressed her hand to her stomach and felt something shift inside her.

No. It couldn't be.

She was eighteen. She'd never even been with anyone. The only time she and Rhett had ever touched was three weeks ago, when she'd stumbled on the trail and he'd caught her arm to steady her. Their eyes had met, and she'd felt that first spark of connection, but nothing more.

Nothing more.

The pain came again, and with it, a terrible certainty.

The mate bond worked in mysterious ways. Sometimes, the moon goddess was cruel.

Selene pushed herself to her feet. Her legs were shaking, but she forced them to move. One step. Then another. Away from the ceremony. Away from the pack that had never wanted her. Away from the man who had just destroyed her in front of everyone she knew.

She didn't look back.

If she had, she might have seen Rhett Ashford watching her go. She might have seen the way his hand pressed against his own chest, right over his heart, where a mark was already beginning to bleed.

But Selene didn't look back.

She walked into the desert night, and she didn't stop until the lights of Ironridge had disappeared behind her.

In her womb, something impossible had already begun to grow.

And in her heart, something else was growing too.

Something that would one day bring an Alpha to his knees.
