September 8

It's been 2 months since the fire. I made a trustworthy friend, who gave me a place to stay, and I've kept my head down, or so I think. Every now and then I feel like I'm being watched, but I brush it off. A lot of people live around here, I'm over thinking things.

As I was saying, I found someone trustworthy, his name was Adam Lopez. He was pretty low key, helpful, tough, exactly what I needed. He's let me stay with him basically since I ran into town, he has no family either, he doesn't know how I lost mine but neither of us ask questions, we respect each other, he's my best friend.

This particular morning I had woken up early to get back to my research. I couldn't help but think the fire at my house was slightly suspicious. Adam thinks I should let it go, but for some reason I just can't.

So here I am, sitting at my computer once again, going through newspaper articles, police and firemen report about the scene, apparently I'm dead. I died in the fire that night, or so everyone thought. Apparently it was the only logical explanation, rather than my escape.

I heard the chair scrape against the floor as Adam pulled it from under the table to sit across from me. I hated that sound, it reminded me of my old life, when I used to go to school, the screeching of the chalk on the board. My final year, my final year would be over now, English major. I would have been an English major, now I'm just a drop out, that damn fire ruined my life.

I could feel Adam's gaze on me so I glanced up slightly "Why are you staring at me?" I asked quietly, it was slightly unnerving when he did that, he had these moments where he'd just stare at me, I never knew what he was thinking about but I always received the same response.

"Nothing, I'm just... why are you still trying to figure this fire thing out?" And there it was. I hated that he didn't believe me about this, something was going on. I had to find out.

I rolled my eyes tiredly "Why can't you accept that I won't let this go until I find out what really happened?"

He stared at me for a couple more minutes before responding quietly "Alex, it's over. There's nothing you can do just let it go." I shot him a small glare, he had no idea.

"This fire, its way more important to me than you think. I need the truth, I need answers!" I stood quickly, shoving my chair under the table tiredly, I walked to the door before looking back at him "I'm going for a walk" I stated simply before walking out the door, closing it probably a little louder than I should have, behind me.

I walked out of our street and headed into the small town a couple of blocks over, the paths I took were unnervingly eerie but I pushed it away and continued on, I'd gotten used to it, but that didn't mean I still couldn't have an underlying layer of fear there somewhere.

I reached the bustling town which wasn't unusual for this time of morning; everyone seemed to like to be out and about early around here, compared to my old home. It was something I got used to fairly quickly. It'd be weird if the town wasn't awake actually, then I might start to worry, but this morning wasn't any different.

I smiled absently as I passed some of the small businesses and stalls here and there. I almost turned around when I noticed a new little stall that I'd never seen before. I could have sworn it wasn't there yesterday. I decided to walk over and check it out.

As I got closer I noticed how dark it was compared to the others, there was something off but I kept walking towards it, it felt like I was drawn to it. I read the sign on the front of the table 'psychic readings, find out what your future holds' I scoffed slightly, figures. I turned to walk away when the woman at the stall beckoned me forwards.

I looked behind me for a second to make sure she was definitely looking at me before I proceeded forward cautiously "Come, come let me read you child" she stated gesturing for me to sit, I did as she stated, there was no harm in this right? It was just a stupid psychic reading that was probably a hoax anyway.

I sat down and let the woman take my hand, she closed her eyes for a minute "Hmm, interesting" she muttered "You've known misery and heartache already, poor girl, although you've shown a great amount of bravery and courage" she spoke quietly as I sat slightly wide eyed, how would she know?

I sat quietly as she continued to speak "I see you've made a friend, a good friend, maybe more than that?" she asked, her eyes still closed

I shook my head quickly "Oh no. no it's nothing like that, he's just a friend..." was this woman insane? How could she assume we were anymore than that?

She opened her eyes quickly, looking at me concerned "You have dark times to come my girl" she stated quietly "Don't trust anyone, you aren't safe. This isn't over, they're coming." She finished sitting back quickly, releasing my hand

I looked her over for a minute "I'm sorry? What does that mean? I don't understand I..." the woman cut me off quickly, almost frantically

"You must leave. Go back home to that boy, he will keep you safe. You're running out of time, they're almost here. Run." She whispered pulling me out of my seat before shooing me forward "go."

I did as she said, heading back to Adam the way I came, as I did, her words rattled around in my mind, what the hell could she have meant?

This isn't over. They're coming.
