At Aetheris State University, the air doesn't just feel cold because of the centralized air conditioning; it feels cold because of the competition. This is the breeding ground for the country’s future leaders, architects, and innovators. In Grade 12, the pressure is at an all-time high, especially when everyone is looking at the digital leaderboard in the Grand Hall.

At the very top, two names were etched in a perpetual tie: Maya Valerius and Julian Alcaraz.

Maya was the Student Council President. She was sharp, poised, and known for her "no-nonsense" attitude. To the students, she was a goddess of productivity. Julian, the Vice President, was her polar opposite in style but her equal in brainpower. He was the brooding artist, the top architecture student who could calculate structural loads in his head while smirking at a joke.

They were the campus crushes. The "IT" pair that everyone shipped, yet everyone feared. Because when Maya and Julian were in the same room, the atmosphere turned into a high-stakes debate.

"You're late, Mr. Vice President," Maya said, her eyes fixed on her laptop. They were inside the Council Office, surrounded by stacks of event proposals. "Three minutes and forty-two seconds. Is the Alcaraz legacy finally slipping?"

Julian tossed his leather portfolio onto the table with a thud. "Traffic was a mess, Madame President. O baka naman masyado mo lang akong namiss kaya binibilang mo bawat segundo ng pagkawala ko?"

Maya’s heart did a violent somersault, but her face remained a mask of ice. "In your dreams, Julian. I just value my time. Unlike some people."

"Ouch. Masyado ka namang masungit," Julian teased, leaning over her desk. He was close—close enough for Maya to smell the faint scent of charcoal and peppermint on him.

To the rest of Aetheris State, they were rivals who couldn't stand each other. People would whisper in the hallways, "Uy, nag-aaway na naman 'yung dalawa sa office," or "Sino kaya ang iiyak sa Quiz Bee next week?" But here was the Biggest Secret: Both of them were lying.

Maya didn't hate Julian. In fact, her journals were filled with sketches of his silhouette. She was head over heels for the guy who challenged her intellect. And Julian? He didn't want to beat Maya. He wanted to be the only one standing by her side. Every smirk was a defense mechanism; every teasing remark was a way to hide the fact that he was completely, hopelessly in love with her.

Neither of them knew. They both assumed the other saw them only as a hurdle to the Top 1 spot.

"Anyway," Julian said, clearing his throat and stepping back. "The Math Olympiad is next week. Are you ready to lose your streak, Valerius?"

Maya finally looked up, her gaze steady. "I don't lose, Julian. You know that. Laging tie, 'di ba?"

"Maybe this time, I'll break the tie," he whispered, his voice suddenly dropping an octave.

"Try me."

Outside the office, their classmates were placing bets.

"Grabe talaga tension nung dalawa," sabi ni Mark habang kumakain sa canteen. "Para silang aso't pusa. Walang gustong magpatalo."

"True," sagot ni Sarah. "Sayang 'no? Bagay pa naman sila. Pero feeling ko, hinding-hindi magiging sila. Masyadong mataas ang pride nina Maya at Julian."

They were the smartest students in the university, but when it came to their own hearts, they were the biggest fools. They were fighting for a crown, unaware that the person they were fighting against was the only one they wanted to share it with.

This was the beginning of the end.
