"The next time you hurt what is mine, you'll have more than bruises to show for your disobedience" the creature snarled, black wings flared, as the words swept past her teeth, four of them ending in curves so sharp it could cut through bone. Her dark eyes seemed to flicker momentarily, emerald eyes replacing the muddy brown ones.
The creature held the girl against the stone wall of the school building gripping her neck, the students and staff gathered around, and their noise dulled to a roar as anger infiltrated her brain. It slinked inside of her mind, and her thoughts turned dark.
This thing, this girl she all about spat out inside her head, thought she could take what she wanted, take it and use it, break it and bend it to her will. Maybe, a dark side of her said, I should make an example out of her. Oh, she loved that idea. She could see the girl's fear, see it in her face, in her stance, in her body, and the way she shook and how her eyes began to fill with crystal clear tears. Oh how the creature loved it, how she could smell the fear as her lips stretched back into an eerie smile, canines threatening to break through skin.
"Please" was all the girl said—repeating it as if it was the only thing she could say. For a moment the creature paused, the anger inside of her did too. As if somehow seeing her own self in this girl. Could see the fear as if it reflected her own, once a long time ago, she had stood in this girl's place.
She had pleaded as tears streaked down her face as the man held her there.
All of her strength had failed her then, and she vowed to never allow herself that moment of weakness, to protect all of those who had been hurt and cast aside, as she once was.
"No," she said sharply, "no, no, no". This is what she deserves, the creature reminded herself. This is what they deserve, what they deserve for hurting others, for their ignorance.
"Get off her!" the boy screamed, pushing to get through the growing crowd. Her friend, he saw through her eyes, could see her anger vibrating through every inch of her. The anger seemed to curl around her, as if foraging an unbreakable wall. She held the girl there, strength unbound, for hurting him.
For him she would burn the world.
A secret she danced with, keeping it close to her beating heart.
People created a path for him, knowing that he of all people would be able to control this Freak.
His own eyes began to fill with tears, not of fear, no, he'd never fear her, of knowing that there was someone who'd protect him in ways nobody else had. But he knew that she was taking it too far, that this anger was destructive, her anger was explosive, beautiful in ways, how emotional she was.
Her sadness was etched in her mind, her anger in her blood, and her happiness in her eyes.
How he loved her eyes, for he swore they could change color. When the gorgeous rays of sun lit them up he could see himself in them. For her eyes were like mirrors of the world itself.
He made it through the crowd, stumbling over feet, reaching for the person he ached was more than just a friend.
His hand broke through the invisible wall, reaching out to touch her. She turned then, startled and he almost gasped, his breath was caught in his chest.
Her eyes.
They had turned a green so lush even the forest would be jealous. Her eyes held so much pain, pain so sharp they could break through glass. He wanted to break whoever had hurt her, break them in ways so unspeakable he'd go to Hell for it and not care.
His gaze softened then as he spoke out loud, "Let her go, I am okay," he promised with his words.
And she did, she let the girl go, let her drop, let her anger evaporate. The girl scrambled away, into the safety of the others that had gathered around, mouths agape at the pure strength of something they'd never truly understand.
The creature seemed to cave in on itself now, the sadness replacing the anger. The sadness covered her like a cloud, soft and gentle, familiar. The boy stepped closer, tan arms reaching to enclose her, wanting to tell her it would be okay, the lie shooting through his heart like an arrow.
But he held her, he held her as she broke, as she sobbed and cried as uncontrollable tears ran down her face like rivers.
He gathered her broken pieces in his arms and he promised to put her back together.
Promised that he'd never leave.
Promise after promise left his lips as he continued to hold her———
for all of time.
