Everything in this story is entirely a figment of my imagination. I don't know the actors personally (unfortunately).

The cool touch of the car's air conditioning was the only thing that had made the evening bearable for Jimmy. Bangkok at night was always a spectacle; city lights spilled across the windshield like a neon cascade, the muffled sounds of traffic barely filtering through the closed windows of Force's luxury car.

Crammed in the back seat between Arm and Off while Force drove with his usual king-of-the-road arrogance, Jimmy watched the familiar neighborhoods scroll past, unable to figure out where they were headed.

"So..."

He asked at one point, after fifteen minutes of conspiratorial laughter and knowing looks between the three of them. A silent conversation he wasn't a part of.

"Can you at least tell me the general direction?"

"Direction: fun!"

Arm answered, slapping him on the shoulder hard enough to make him jump.

"Direction: graduation gift."

Off corrected with that small smirk that Jimmy knew all too well. It was the kind of smirk that usually preceded situations that would later require considerable effort to escape

"Guys..."

"Jimmy. Don't be a buzzkill. Just wait and see,"

Force concluded from the driver's seat, without deigning to glance at him in the rearview mirror. Eventually, Jimmy let it go, resting his head against the window and watching Bangkok flow by. He'd learned to do that over the years, just to let things go. It wasn't resignation, he told himself; it was simply practical wisdom. With those three, certain battles weren't worth fighting.

They'd grown up together: him, Arm, Off, and Force. Families in the same circles, the same private schools, the same country clubs, the same holidays in Hua Hin every August. Jimmy was the son of one of Bangkok's most renowned surgeons, and his mother was a famous entrepreneur who had turned luxury real estate into a form of personal art. He'd always had money, plenty of it. But he'd learned early on that there was a vast divide between having money and being the money. It was a distinction his three friends hadn't just missed; they had no interest in ever learning it. For Arm, Off, and Force, the world was divided into two categories: those who could afford everything and those who couldn't. Since they belonged to the first, the rest was just a detail.

Jimmy wasn't like that. Jimmy had studied medicine for nine years, drinking cold coffee at three in the morning over heavy textbooks. He'd completed his rotations without ever using his father's name to open doors. Two days ago, he had defended his specialization thesis before a committee that knew nothing of his pedigree and had given him top marks anyway. He was proud of that. It was perhaps the only thing he was truly proud of at that moment. And his friends were celebrating by driving him around Bangkok at midnight like they were the ones who had pulled off something significant. When the car finally stopped, Jimmy lifted his head and took a few seconds to focus.

The hotel was imposing. It was the kind of structure that communicates wealth without needing to be loud about it: pale marble, internally lit glass walls, orderly palms lining the entrance, and a uniformed doorman already stepping toward the curb as the sedan pulled up. The name stood above the entrance in gold letters, written with the kind of discretion only truly expensive places can afford. Jimmy noted, with a cold knot in his stomach that had nothing to do with the AC, that they were practically adjacent to one of Bangkok's most notorious districts for "nocturnal entertainment." It didn't take a medical degree to read the geography of the situation.
