Chapter 1 — The Waiter
New Moon | October 15 | 3:07 a.m.
The Mississippi River does not sleep.
At three in the morning the water moves black and slow beneath the West Bank bridges, carrying mud from half a continent and the quiet weight of a thousand old stories. Barges slide past like dark islands. Somewhere upriver a foghorn groans—a sound that has meant slow down, something's ahead for longer than anyone in this city has been alive.
Inside the Copeland's on Manhattan Boulevard, the night shift is nearly finished.
Kevin wipes down a table near the bar while the last few customers linger over dessert. The restaurant smells like butter, garlic, and sugar—the thick comforting scent of Louisiana cooking that never quite leaves your clothes. It's in the upholstery, the menus, the walls. The smell of Friday nights and family dinners and tourists discovering that creole cream cheese is not cheese at all but something closer to a dream.
A jazz trumpet whispers through the speakers. Chet Baker, maybe. Or someone who wishes they were Chet Baker. The kind of music that makes empty restaurants feel haunted by conversations that haven't happened yet.
Forks clink softly.
Ice settles in glasses.
Outside the windows, the parking lot lights of Oakwood Center glow pale against the humid sky, casting everything in that orange sodium haze that makes the world look both artificial and nostalgic at the same time. Cars drift past occasionally—shift workers, drunk drivers, people running from something or toward it.
Kevin stacks three empty parfait glasses onto his tray. Creole cream cheese. The restaurant's most popular dessert, even at three in the morning. The glasses are heavy-bottomed, old, the kind that feel solid in your hand. Strawberries stain the bottom of each one red, bleeding syrup into the remaining cream.
He glances at the clock above the bar.
3:07 a.m.
Closing time approaches slowly on the West Bank. The last of the late diners—a couple in their sixties, married long enough to eat in comfortable silence—are working through coffee and pecan pie. The woman laughs at something her husband says. The husband reaches across the table and touches her hand.
Kevin looks away.
He's been watching the tables all night. Not because he's nosy. Because that's what good waiters do—read rooms, anticipate needs, notice when someone's water glass is empty before they notice it themselves. It's a skill that carries over into other parts of life. Reading people. Knowing when something's wrong before anyone says a word.
Tonight, something's wrong.
He felt it first around midnight, when the dinner rush faded and the restaurant settled into its late-night rhythm. A pressure. Like the air before a thunderstorm, except the sky outside is clear. No rain predicted until Tuesday.
Then the vibration started.
Faint. Barely there. The kind of thing you'd blame on a passing truck or the ice machine cycling on. Except the trucks on Manhattan don't shake the building like that. And the ice machine is on the other side of the kitchen.
