Fame is lethal.

At the age of five, Caprice had felt the peculiar mixture of exhilaration and dread that only the world of acting could conjure.

But fame, she realized, had a different way of asking for something in return. It demanded perfection at all hours.

A price for being known.

"Okay naman po kami," she started with a polite smile she had mastered a long time ago. "Our friendship got stronger pagkatapos ng project."

But none of it shook her. She knew what she was doing.

"But people are saying there's more than friendship," she pressed, leaning forward slightly in her seat. "After all, the chemistry was undeniable."

Muling umugong ang audience.

Caprice felt the familiar heat of the studio lights against her skin. The cameras were trained on her: every blink, every breath, every twitch of her lips captured and broadcast to millions.

She kept the smile.

"If the audience felt the chemistry, then we did our job well."

The host chuckled. "So walang something?"

Caprice tilted her head slightly, still wearing that practiced smile. "Wala po."

Caprice was well aware of this particular toxic trait of the public. In show business, truth was rarely what people wanted.

What they wanted was the version of the truth that satisfied their delusions.

The kind that turned simple glances into secret romances. The kind that turned co-stars into lovers.

And she hated it. She hated that she had to explain herself to people who insisted on seeing stories where none existed.

"I respect my co-actors po, and I only see them as my family," she added.

But she knew exactly where she stood.

She had mastered the art of keeping her truth to herself.

The applause, the whispers, the speculations; they meant nothing compared to knowing who she really was.

She made her way towards the exit right after the interview.

She had learned long ago that in this industry, control over her image was the only power she could truly claim. And today, she would not let anyone take that from her.
