Ryleigh had just gotten into it with her girlfriend, and the air inside the house felt thick like every wall was holding onto the argument. Staying there wasn't doing her any favors, so she grabbed her hoodie and stepped outside, letting the door shut a little harder than she meant to.

The night wrapped around her, cool and quiet. The kind of cold that sneaks under your sleeves and forces you to breathe a little slower. Streetlights painted the sidewalk in soft gold patches, and the sky hung dark and heavy above her. Each step helped drain a bit of the anger out of her chest. Not gone but calmer. Manageable.

She shoved her hands into her pockets, staring down at the cracks in the pavement, replaying the fight in her head for the hundredth time.

Then headlights crept up beside her.

A black Toyota Camry rolled slowly along the curb, engine humming low, matching her pace.

"Hey, baby... what's a pretty girl like you doing out here walking alone this late?" Raven called, a low chuckle in her voice as she leaned slightly toward the open window.

Ryleigh's shoulders tensed at first. The headlights cast long shadows across the sidewalk, and her heart thumped a little faster.

"Oh uh... I just needed some air, you know?" she said, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear, trying not to sound as shaken as she felt.

Raven lifted her hands slightly off the steering wheel in a harmless gesture. "Hey, relax. I'm not on that type of time. I don't wanna mess with you or nothing. Just making sure you're good. It's late out here." Her voice softened. "If you want, I can give you a ride. Wherever you're headed."

Normally, Ryleigh would've shut it down immediately. No thanks. I'm good. She wasn't the type to hop into cars with strangers.

But something about Raven's tone didn't feel pushy. It felt... steady. Calm. Like she actually meant what she said.

Ryleigh hesitated, glancing up and down the empty street. The night suddenly felt a little colder.

"Uh... okay," she said slowly, stepping closer to the car. "I guess I'll take the free ride."

Raven grinned, reaching over to unlock the passenger door. "Cool. Hop in. I got you."

The click of the lock echoed louder than it should have in the quiet street.

As Ryleigh settled into the passenger seat, the door clicking shut, she felt it.

Raven was looking at her.

Not just a quick glance either — a slow, lingering look. The kind that makes your skin warm even when the air's cold.

Raven smirked a little before pulling off the curb. "I'm not tryna be all in your business," she said, voice smooth, "but what got you walking around this late? Eleven at night ain't exactly safe."
Ryleigh looked out the window, pretending she wasn't slightly flustered. "Me and my girl got into a bad fight. I just needed space. Needed to breathe."

Raven hummed softly. "Ohhh. So you like girls?"

Ryleigh turned her head slowly. "Yeah. I do. That a problem?"

Raven's lips curved. "Not at all. If anything... that just made you ten times more interesting." She glanced at her. "I like girls too."

Ryleigh swallowed, trying to stay cool. "Mhm."

Raven tapped her fingers lightly on the steering wheel. "So what was the fight about? Or is that classified information?"

Ryleigh shook her head. "I really don't feel like talking about it."

Raven nodded immediately. "That's cool. I ain't gonna push you." Her tone softened. "You deserve a night where somebody just makes you feel better."

The words sat between them for a second.

"Wait," Raven said, glancing over again. "I never got your name."

"Oh my bad," Ryleigh said quickly. "It's Ryleigh."

Raven let the name roll off her tongue slowly. "Ryleigh..." She smiled like she liked how it tasted. "I'm Raven."

There was a pause.

Raven looked over again, catching the way Ryleigh shifted in her seat. "Why you look nervous?"

"I'm not nervous."

"Mm." Raven chuckled softly. "You sure? 'Cause you just said your name like I was grading you."

Ryleigh laughed despite herself. "You're annoying."

"Nah," Raven replied smoothly, eyes flicking back to the road. "You just ain't used to somebody looking at you like they already know you trouble."

Ryleigh felt her heart skip. "And what if I am?"

Raven's grin widened. "Then I guess I like a little trouble."
