a spark between friends

The smoke from the grill clung to the hot Saturday afternoon air in South Philly, mixing with the loud bursts of laughter from Joe and Liam, inseparable duo, even when it came to flipping sausages. Galena's lips curved into a small smile as she watched the two of them, locked in their own world of firefighter camaraderie, oblivious to everything else. Beside her, Melissa squinted against the sinking sun, a half-smile tugging at her mouth.

"They never change, do they?" Crawford's soft voice cut through the hum of the barbecue.

Melissa let out a sharp little huff, tucking a strand of fiery hair behind the small gold hoops at her ear.

"Nah, forget it. You put those two in an empty room, give it five minutes, they will be farting at each other or cracking dumb jokes." she rolled her eyes with a fondness she would never admit out loud. "Sometimes I wonder what the hell I got myself into with one of these fire boys." her South Philly drawl gave the complaint a rough-edged charm.

The taller, tanned woman chuckled under her breath. "I guess they have a certain... Handsome chaos?"

"That is one way to put it," Melissa shot back, her gaze flicking to Gale's.

For a heartbeat, time stretched, an almost imperceptible spark, quick as a struck match. Then Melissa looked away, snapping open a can of soda with a hiss. "At least they got each other. Joe comes home running his mouth about his 'adventures' with Liam, like they are two kids all over again."

A comfortable silence fell between them, broken only by the sizzle of the grill and the scattered voices of the other guests. Galena felt Melissa's gaze brush her every so often, curious, almost hesitant. She caught the way Melissa worried her bottom lip while watching the men, and a sudden warmth pulsed through her chest.

"Ya know," Melissa said, her voice dropping, almost conspiratorial. "Sometimes I start thinking... They spend every damn day together, risking their necks for each other. Got to be something different there, you feel me?"

Galena tilted her head, sensing Melissa was reaching deeper. "Yes... I can say it as an unshakable trust."

Melissa spun the soda can slowly between her fingers, eyes locked on the fizz. "It is just..." she hesitated, then sighed. "For us? Sitting at home all the time? Sometimes it feels like we are not even part of their world." her words landed heavier than she meant them to.

"I understand," Crawford replied softly, a ribbon of empathy in her voice. "I feel it too. Like there is a piece of their lives locked away, a code only they share."

Melissa finally looked up, meeting her eyes. This time, the contact lingered. There was a vulnerability there, raw and unguarded, that made Galena's breath catch.

"That is it! Exactly," Melissa gave a humorless laugh. "And here we are, listening to their stories about fires and hauling cats out of trees, cute for a six-year-old, or when they are trying to impress some young thing. But us?" a sad little curve tugged at her lips.

Lena's fingers twitched with the urge to reach for her hand. She hesitated, pulse thrumming, then disguised it by reaching for a napkin. Their fingers brushed, barely, enough. The touch carried an invisible charge, sharp and electric. The world seemed to hush around them. Melissa's eyes widened, a faint blush rising to her cheeks.

"For us on the outside..." Galena's voice was low, hushed, her gaze still locked on Melissa's face. "I guess it is not the same at all." the air between them thickened, charged. Their husbands' laughter in the distance felt muffled, irrelevant.

In the narrow space between their hands, a quiet universe of possibilities opened, a fragile and dangerous one.
