Abandoned
The last time I slept this well was when I was still a child with my own side of the mattress with my younger sister. With the constant movement of an old carriage on top of wet gravel and the rumbles of exhausted horses, I could sleep for hours. Tall towering trees with a mass amount of dried green leaves covered them. It surrounded my blurred vision in a matter of a few seconds.
Most of the land I once saw was flat and dry, a brownish tan. My childhood was very dull compared to this washed out green. A tad bit better I would say. The cold wind brushed across my face, but not enough to comb through my darkened hair.
It took my breath back to reality. The smell of wet outdoor nature hit my nose, I felt a heavy weight on my lap, a strong presence made me feel uneasy. I've zoned back in, my vision seemed to worsen opening my eyes.
"You're awake?" a deep calm but chilling voice spoke to me, it was my father. A tall and enlarged figure sat beside me.
I kept my unfocused eyes on the rear of the horse in front of me.
"Yeah, was I asleep long?" I spoke with a quiet and short tone.
"We're in town already," I could feel him look away from me.
I don't respond. I feel the carriage take a sharp left turn and slowly come to a stop in front of a small building.
I stood up and jumped off the carriage, my small luggage in hand. My father joined me as we walked to the front entrance. It was an apartment building, it seemed nicer than our past house, if a one room studio could even be considered a house. There were tall ceilings, the walls and floors were all one color, white. The entrance leads to a lounge room and a long dark hallway on the right.
"Can we afford this?" I asked in a bit of disbelief, I squinted as I looked around.
"I can afford this," he corrected. ", This is where I'm staying, I've signed you up to live in the dorms the school here offers for 300 a month." He spoke with a firm voice, I could tell there was a cocky undertone to it.
I furrowed my eyebrows in disagreement, "Why would you do that? You can't just send me away, my money alone won't be able to cover that. And where did you get the money for this? I know there's no way you have a job right now." I retaliated, firm and sharp.
I could feel the tension in my left thumb as I balled up my fist. I looked at his figure enlarging as he walked towards me, I stepped back out of instinct.
I froze immediately when he gripped my arm, I felt his large rough hand press over my eyes. I tugged harshly at his arm as I felt the painful pressure in my eyes.
"Watch it." He spat.
It was a cruel punishment, as much as we could not see already it was a great fear I had as a child. If I were to lose my sight completely.
I could feel my hands slightly tremble as my fist fell. I could feel my neck bare, he had let go. I was surprised I didn't feel a hand across my face.
I look down, my face twitched with conflicted feelings, as soon as our family fell apart he wanted to push his last family away, He never liked me did he? I could hear his heavy footsteps distancing away and the screeching of his rough hands on the assisted metal rail around the whole building, something older people needed. I tighten my grip on my small suitcase.
I now stood in front of one of four large dark buildings, I had voiced in a horse cab on my outdated watch band, the newer ones were able to pinpoint your exact location and a government Ai would assist you. My steps were slow as I stepped into the building, It was humid and quiet, until I heard a firm loud voice, their figure was tall and slightly curved outwards
"Ah, are you Eli?' She spoke in a proud tone.
She whipped her cane stick side to side frantically squeaking, she walked to me, her figure was more expressive than most people i've met, it was unsettling. I felt her long fingers on my shoulder as she patted it, I grimaced at her touch.
"Y-yeah I am, How did you know?' I asked a bit weirded out, even with my blurred vision I could see a wide upward curve on her face.
"I've been waiting, of course, and just for you I have a student here to show you around, My school is quite big." she spoke cheerfully.
She pushed me further into the school, I then noticed someone emerging into my view, their footsteps were quiet and soft. Only a few feet from me, they stopped. Their figure was shorter and slimmer, but I didn't notice any long hair. They held out something small to me with both hands.
"Here, it's our uniforms." He spoke quietly.
I stepped closer, grabbing the folded clothes, I almost scoffed that he was a guy. There was a short awkward silence like he was waiting for something. The woman, who I assumed was the head of the school, walked to the side of us hitting me in the ankle with her long cane, I groaned at the sudden pain.
"Sorry dear," she apologized, she placed a hand on the boy's shoulder, "This is Dove, he'll be with you for a while, isn't that so?"
Dove didn't look her way, he kept his head lowered, "Yes, madam Vinex." He answered in an almost robotic manner.
She then whipped her cane sideways as she walked off out of the dormitory. The entrance seemed big and empty, I held my folded clothes under my arm.
What a ditzy woman tch.
