It was there. It was watching him. He could feel it, breathing down his neck as he turned to look behind him, and then again as he looked in front of him, with the dim lighting from his flashlight, he couldn't see five feet in front of him, but he still carried on, hoping to find his way out of the wretched forest his friends had abandoned him in. To be fair, they had only meant to drive about a mile into the forest, but when he had bet them he could find his way back from twenty miles in the forest, they had taken him up on that bet, saying they'd see him in the morning if he found his way out by then. Now, at around seven, he still hadn't found his way out; instead, he had managed to wander deeper into the forest, getting hopelessly turned around and unable to see anything besides the small ring of trees his flashlight illuminated. He thought he had seen a girl, but when he called out to her, she turned and ran off, farther into the forest than he had ever been, having visited this forest a lot while he was growing up.

He didn't know exactly how long he had felt like he was being watched; all he knew was that he was definitely being watched by someone or something. Every time he had shone his light around him, the feeling would intensify, as though whatever was watching him was getting closer, the feeling of slight panic never leaving his body. He had thought he caught a glimpse of something hiding behind a tree when he had shone his flashlight behind him, but was never completely sure of it. When he had faced forward again, he heard someone whisper his name, quiet with a teasing lilt to the tone, as if it was trying to coax him deeper into the forest, trying to get him even more turned around than he already was. When he had passed the same tree with that same red substance that looked entirely too much like blood, he began to grow worried, like something was leading him in circles. When he pulled out his phone and saw that it was actually almost midnight, he realized he was more lost than he had originally thought. He pulled up the maps app on his phone and watched as the little bit of cell reception he had worked its slow magic and figured out where he was. He realized he was actually about fifty miles into the forest now, but he felt confident he could figure out how to get out if he used his phone to guide him.

He decided to text one of his friends before he started walking again, getting a response back fairly quickly. His friends had parked the car just outside the forest, along where they had turned in from the main road. He looked back down at his phone and began to walk in the direction he figured was the main road. When he had walked about five miles, he looked at his phone and panicked when it showed that he had barely moved from where he was two hours prior. The whole forest had a small amount of cell reception as he walked along the path that had been carved out for the rangers who patrolled the area after dark. Now that he was thinking about it, he hadn't seen the rangers once, and they were on thirty-minute patrols. He knew if he followed the path, he'd be able to find his way out, but when he passed that damn tree again, he began to panic.

He called his friends and told them they needed to come get him, as quickly as they could, before he got even more lost. He knew he was going to get teased, and his friends were gonna give him hell for 'abandoning the mission,' he also knew they could hear the panic and fear in his voice. His friends immediately started the car and pulled onto the path for the rangers, following it down into the forest as they called for him. He was still on the phone with them when all of a sudden, it jumped out at him, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt and dragging him farther into the forest as he screamed for help. Whatever was dragging him deep into the forest had an inhumane amount of strength as he was dragged up the side of a cliff, watching as the headlights of his friend's truck got smaller and smaller from above the trees. He had dropped his phone at the bottom of the cliff, right around the time he had felt his breathing come out in short, quick pants, when he wasn't screaming that is. He felt claws dig into his shoulder as he was dragged, before he was ultimately launched over the edge of the cliff, his back colliding with a thick tree trunk before he slammed into the ground. When he looked up, all he saw was the girl he thought he had seen hours ago, but this time she was as white as a piece of paper, and her hair was inky black tendrils that coiled on the ground around her feet as she stood there at the edge of the cliff, watching him, waiting for him to move, or scream again. When he did finally scream again, she had seemed to launch herself the twenty feet between them, only to wrap her hands around his throat, cutting off his breathing, and silencing him immediately. When he looked up at the girl's face, all he saw was a smile from ear to ear, which appeared to be carved into her face more than anything, but she was missing all other facial features. She had no eyes or nose, just flat white space where those features should have been. He panicked more as he saw her face, realizing he was going to die, soon, if not right then and there.
