The chandeliers in the Jones mansion dripped light onto the marble floors, each crystal a tiny, captured star. Steve stood by the grand piano, his fingers tracing the cool ivory keys without playing a note. The silence in the house was a living thing, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the distant chime of an antique clock.
Lisa glided into the room, a vision in silk and diamonds. Her smile, practiced and perfect, didn't quite reach her eyes. "Waiting for Mother, darling?"
"She called a family meeting," Steve replied, his voice a low rumble. "I have a bad feeling about this."
Just then, Suzanne Jones swept in, her saree rustling like dry autumn leaves. Her presence immediately filled the cavernous space, sucking the air out of it. Her gaze, sharp as a shard of glass, bypassed her daughter-in-law and fixed on her son. "Steve. We need to talk. In private."
A flicker of panic crossed Lisa's face before being smoothed away by years of high-society training. She gave a small, graceful nod. "Of course, Mummyji. I'll just... check on the arrangements for the charity gala." She retreated, her departure as silent as her arrival.
Suzanne waited until the soft click of the door echoed through the hall. "It's been five years, Steve. Five years of doctors, of prayers, of... nothing."
Steve's jaw tightened. "Lisa is trying, Mother. We both are."
"Is she?" Suzanne's voice was laced with a venomous sweetness. "Or is she enjoying her freedom? The parties, the travels, the complete and utter lack of responsibility? A child is a cage, Steve. Perhaps she doesn't want to be caged."
"That's not fair." But even as he said it, a seed of doubt, long buried, began to sprout. He remembered Lisa's nonchalance after the last negative test, the way she'd immediately booked a spa weekend.
"Fair?" Suzanne laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "What's fair is you carrying on the Jones name. What's fair is me having a grandchild to hold before I die. This marriage... this beautiful, childless marriage... is a barren field. We need to plant a seed elsewhere."
Steve stared at her, a cold dread seeping into his bones. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying I have found a solution. A girl. Simple. Healthy. From a good, but very poor, family. She will give us an heir. And Lisa," Suzanne's lips curved into a triumphant smile, "Lisa will raise it as her own. No one will ever know. The family line continues. Your wife gets the child she claims to want, without the inconvenience of carrying it. Everyone wins."
The world tilted on its axis. The crystal chandeliers seemed to sway, their light distorting into grotesque shapes. "You're insane," he breathed. "You want me to... to be with another woman? To betray my wife?"
Suzanne stepped closer, her scent of expensive perfume and something bitter, like almonds, filling the space between them. "This isn't betrayal, Steve. This is pragmatism. This is duty. Lisa can't give you a son. This girl can. Think of it. Your son. Your heir. Playing in these very halls. All you have to do is... your part. I will handle everything else. The girl, the money, the arrangements, the birth."
She placed a cool, manicured hand on his arm. "You are a good son. You will do what is right for this family."
Her touch was a brand. He felt trapped, the marble floor beneath him turning to quicksand. He looked at his mother, at the absolute conviction in her eyes, and knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the soul, that she had already done it. She had already found the girl. The plan was in motion. He was simply the final, necessary piece.
"No," he said, the word torn from a place deep inside him he hadn't known existed. "Absolutely not."
Suzanne's smile didn't falter. "We'll see." She turned and swept out of the room, leaving him alone with the silent piano and the suffocating weight of her plan.
