I'm Not Weird, I'm Unique (Chapter 3)

Start from the beginning

“He didn’t mention Skylar,” I told him, wow, I was an idiot.

“Whatever, call your father. We need to start on this project. We can go to my house,” He told me.

I pulled out my cell phone and pressed speed dial, three.

Ring, ring, “Hello?”

“Dad? It’s me,”

“Oh, hey Kay. Whatcha need?” He asked me.

“I need to go over to my friend Nicholas’s house. We have a project we have to work on. So, I won’t be home for dinner,” I told him.

“Should I be concerned about you going home with another boy?”

“No, we need to work on a project. I’ll talk to you later,” I told him.

“Alright, be safe. Bye,” He said. I pressed the ‘end’ button on my phone.

NICHOLAS’S POV

I picked up Kaylee from school; I had ditched the last period to go get my car. I figured we could drive back to my house and start on that project that I really didn’t care about. I pulled up beside her when she walked out of school,

“Hey, need a ride?” I asked her, she said something about how I didn’t drive to school and I explained to her that I ditched to go and get it.

We talked some more, and then she mentioned that Collin Abington had asked her to hang out, now that I’m not okay with. I kept my cool, though. I tried to explain that he and Skylar are tight, I mean, really tight. Collin has always had his eye on Skylar, but she was my girl, not his. Anyways, he had asked her to hang out tomorrow, and of course Kaylee accepted. Once that conversation passed, she called her dad for his okay for her to come to my house. I hoped her father wasn’t the over protective if-you-touch-my-daughter-you-die, kind of guy.

“He’s fine with it,” She told me, putting her phone back into her skirt pocket. I examined her while she looked out the window. Her black hair framed her face so nicely, her black and white polka-dot shirt made her green eyes pop. She was beautiful.

KAYLEE’S POV

We pulled up into this circular driveway that in the middle held a fountain. This looked like one of those houses that you only see in movies. He lived on the opposite side of the neighborhood as me. I lived in the normal sized houses, and this was obviously the mansion side. His house was the biggest on the block. He led me into the house. There were two different carpeted staircases that went to the exact same place, but it still looked amazing. The floor was white marble, and a chandelier sparkled as the light hit it.

“Nicholas? Is that you?” A woman walked into the room. She was about five foot six, with blonde hair that just touched her shoulders. Her make-up was done to perfection and her black dress came right below her knee. She was perfect.

“Hey, mom,” Nicholas said to her as we stood at the front door.

“Who is your friend, Nick?” She asked, obviously referring to me.

“This is Kaylee McCoy. We’re working on our second semester project together. She’s new at the school,” He told her.

“Nice to meet you, Kaylee. What brought you to the school?” His mom asked me.

“My dad got a new job, so we moved here from Los Angeles. He heard that this school was one of the best in town, so we moved to the neighborhood just so I could go to the school,” I told her, looking down at my feet.

“Yes, it’s a great school. By the way, you can call me Mrs. Preston. Are you two hungry?” Mrs. Preston asked us.

Before either of us could answer, a cry came from inside the kitchen. Mrs. Preston ran in and came out with a toddler clinging to her shirt. He was a cute little boy with light brown hair that came just above his eyebrows. He had a small red stain on his blue and white striped shirt.

“I think we’re okay for right now, mom,” Nicholas answered and pulled me upstairs.

“Who was that?” I asked as we walked up the stairs and down a long hallway.

“Cameron, that's my little brother. He's two,” He told me as we walked into the last room of the hallway.

The room was painted a light blue color, and the carpet was white. For a teenage boy’s room, it was pretty clean. Aside from the few magazines on the floor and a soda can on the nightstand, it was clean. The black comforter was messed up, so his bed was not made. I scanned the room as I went to sit down on the bed, following after Nicholas. A particular box caught my eye; it was orange and was labeled, ‘Trojan’. It was opened and had little packets spilling out, with an empty wrapper almost falling off of the nightstand. I studied it from afar before Nicholas asked,

“What are you looking at?”

NICHOLAS’S POV

I drove Kaylee home from school and we arrived at my house. Mom immediately bombarded her with questions, and then Cameron started crying from the kitchen.  That was our queue to leave. Finally. But of course, that didn’t stop mom. She came back in, this time with Cam on her hip, and she started asking if we were hungry. I told her we weren’t and I pulled Kaylee upstairs to my room. As I opened the door I noticed my room was clean. Barbra must have come today. Barbra was our maid; she came Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. I walked over to my bed and lay down on the side closest to the wall. Kaylee sat down, and started looking at something. She looked concerned, almost scared. I tried to figure out what she was looking at when I looked over on my night stand. Oh shit, the condoms.

“What are you looking at?” I said nervously.

She forced a small smile and pushed a piece of hair behind her ear. I looked behind her, of course with my luck the condoms were pouring out of the box, and an empty wrapper was sitting there.  Why didn’t I remember to pick that up?

“Are those…” Kaylee started, but she lost her words.

“Yeah, hang on,” I said getting off the bed and putting the box and wrapper in the nightstand drawer.

She reached down and picked up another, I’m guessing it fell, “Why?” She asked.

“Why, what?” I asked, acting like nothing had happened.

“Why do you have these?”

“Protecting purposes,” I answered, shakily.

“For when you screw Skylar,” She said bitterly.

“That’s one way to put it,” I said, biting my bottom lip. Great, she’s gonna hate me now, “But, I haven’t used one in a long time!” I said, trying to calm her down. Wow, that came out bad.

She starred at me, confused.

“I mean, we haven’t needed them. Because we haven’t done it, in awhile,” I said, trying to save myself.

“Why do you leave them out in the open? Doesn’t your mom care? And don’t you have siblings that could see this?” She questioned me, still holding the wrapper up in front of me.

“Well, look, Kaylee. Maybe we used one just the other night and I forgot to put them away.” I told her, as I saw the color drain from her face.

“Whatever,” Kaylee said getting up to leave, but I rushed up after her and held the door closed. I was a good seven or eight inches taller than her, so it wasn’t hard. “Let me out!” She yelled, but I covered her mouth.

“Look, Kaylee, I've been thinking lately, I don't think I love Skylar anymore.” I let it come out, had I really just said that?
