Whispers in the Ash

The ash-choked winds of Pandora's forsaken valleys whipped through my hair like invisible claws, carrying the acrid scent of smoldering earth and distant fires that never truly died.

I stood at the edge of the Ash Clan's volcanic domain, my heart a traitorous drumbeat echoing the rumble of molten rivers below, knowing full well that stepping into Varang's shadow would unravel me—piece by fragile piece—yet the pull of her fierce, unyielding gaze, those eyes like embers in the night, promised a destruction I craved more than breath itself.

The day before-

The warm glow of Pandora's setting sun painted the vast skies in hues of orange and purple, casting long shadows over our caravan as it drifted through the endless wilds.

I leaned against the woven railing of our massive kite-ship, the wind tugging at my beaded braids like playful spirits.

As a daughter of the Wind Traders— the Tlalim Clan— I'd spent my eighteen cycles wandering the floating mountains, bioluminescent forests, and misty valleys, bartering rare herbs, glowing crystals, and woven artifacts with clans far and wide.

My skin bore the intricate tattoos of our people: swirling patterns of wind currents and trade routes, each line a story of alliances sealed under starry nights or dangers dodged in stormy skies.

In our clan, freedom was our blood— no roots to tie us down, just the endless horizon calling us forward.

Today felt different, though. A buzz of excitement rippled through the air as our fleet of kite-ships— enormous, sail-like vessels harnessed to massive banshees and propelled by the winds— prepared for new passengers.

Word had spread like wildfire: Toruk Makto himself, Jake Sully, and his mate Neytiri were joining us for a stretch of the journey.

They were escorting their son, the sky-child called Spider, to safer airs where he could breathe easier without his strange mask.

I'd heard the tales around our campfires— how Jake had led the Omatikaya to victory against the Sky People, how his family had sought refuge with the Metkayina and faced horrors beyond imagining.

To us Wind Traders, they were legends, bridges between worlds, and having them aboard was an honor that could bring good trades and stronger bonds.

I spotted them first from my perch high on the main deck. Jake and Neytiri soared in on their ikrans, wings slicing through the air with effortless grace.

Their children stayed with us on the ship: Lo'ak, the bold one with a rebellious spark in his eyes; Kiri, graceful and mysterious; little Tuk, giggling as she danced around our fire; and Spider, the human boy in his exopack, looking both out of place and fiercely determined.

They landed smoothly on the broad platform of our lead ship, the banshees folding their wings as our clan elders stepped forward to greet them.

Jake landed fiercely on the front of the ship, striding over with confidence. "Welcome, Toruk Makto," my father, Peylak, said with a deep bow, his voice steady and warm.

He was our clan's lead negotiator, tall and wise, with scars from old skirmishes etched across his arms.

My mother, Yu'nar, stood beside him, her gentle smile hiding the sharp mind that always spotted the best deals.

My younger sister, Sira, only twelve cycles old, peeked out from behind her, eyes wide with awe at the Sullys.

Jake clasped my father's forearm in the Na'vi way. "Thank you for this. It's a long road, but your winds will carry us true." Neytiri nodded silently, her gaze scanning the horizon as if sensing unseen threats.
