The year is 2036...

Duel Monsters. Once upon a time, this name only meant a fun little game of cards with monsters on them. But that's no longer the case. No, in this day and age, the world revolves around Duel Monsters. Wars are fought with Duel Monsters, cities are powered with Duel Monsters, and schools teach new Duel Monsters strategies. It was like a drug, and humanity was hopelessly addicted to it.

Then, there was a young boy...

Yuji Mutou. Grandson of the King of Games himself, Yugi Mutou. Yuji lost his parents when he was a child, too young to even remember their faces. So he, and his little sister were put into their grandfather's care. All was not well in the Mutou household, however. Yugi was not the upbeat young boy he once was. After having witnessed the world fall apart in the crushing grip of Duel Monsters, Yugi could no longer call himself the King of Games. For no king wishes to rule a wasteland.

---------------------------

It started like any other day. A young Yuji, only 13 years old, started his first day of highschool. Walking in, his earbuds blasted his favorite music into his ears. And thanks to this, Yuji cluelessly walked right in the middle of a raging duel between two of the school's best duelists: the menacing school bully, Aoi Ryota, and the one-armed warrior, Inafune Kazuma. Ryota's hologram duel disk sat along the length of his arm, and glowed in a dark purple color representative of his affinity for fiend types. Kazuma's rested at waist level, unmoving as if it were a table, and glowed in a dark green color that matched his medium-length hair.

Behind them sat a large crowd of students, cheering for both combatants equally as Kazuma's gigantic, heroic warriors dueled Ryota's huge, demonic fiend monsters. One of these massive beasts immediately swung for the oblivious Yuji, which led Kazuma to leap towards the oblivious young man, and push him out of the way as the blade struck the ground.

"Th-thanks...!" Yuji said to the boy who'd saved his life, his face in disbelief as he watched the enormous monsters towering above him, that had almost ended his story then and there, fade into specks of digital material. Ryota, the other duelist, immediately approached Kazuma, and started picking on him.

"Aw, chickening out? I thought you were supposed to be this brave warrior or something? Go ahead and flap away with your one wing-" Ryota's harassment was immediately interrupted by a blow to his face. Not from Kazuma, no. But from the boy Kazuma had saved; Yuji. "Do the world a favor and shut up." The young Mutou stated as he watched Ryota fall to the dirt. The others around him gasped, especially Kazuma, who barely believed what had just happened.

"Y-you just... oh, you've done it now, you little shi-" Ryota began to say as he got up from the ground, moving to swing at Yuji for revenge. But his fist was stopped by the school bell calling students to class. A low growl left Ryota's mouth through his clenched teeth as he backed off. "Don't think this is over. I'll see you after class." He stated before walking inside.

With Ryota's exit, Kazuma turned towards Yuji and offered a high-five to him, congratulating him for punching the school bully in the face. "Nice one. I can't tell you how long I've wanted to do that. I'm Kazuma, by the way. What's your name?"

The one armed, green haired boy asked as Yuji returned his high-five. Kazuma then started walking forward, headed inside before they both wound up late for class. "My name's Yuji. Yuji Mutou. Nice to meet you."

That name was enough to make Kazuma pause. His father had been a big fan of the king of games, Yugi Mutou. Kazuma knew more than he wanted to about Yugi, even the name of his family members. Anzu, his wife, Yusuke, his son, Yuki, his granddaughter, and... "Wait, Yuji Mutou!? As in, king of games Yugi Mutou's grandson!? Oh, you've GOTTA meet my dad one day. He's gonna get a kick out of this!"

Kazuma rambled, not noticing Yuji's exhausted sigh. Everywhere he went, the same reaction. He simply introduces himself, and the other person starts fangirling about his grandfather. It was like a never-ending cycle. He mentally considered just keeping his surname a secret, though doubted his silence would keep it hidden for long.

"Yeah, uh... My gramps isn't exactly a duelist anymore..." Yuji admitted, much to Kazuma's shock. "S-serious!? I mean, I guess everybody has to retire some day, but Yugi Mutou? That almost doesn't sound real." The green-haired boy's words were filled with utter shock. "It's not even just that. It's like he straight up hates the game. I tried to play it once and he went ballistic."

"Jeez..." Kazuma said, bewildered by Yuji's story. "Why? It's just a game, after all. One he used to be a master at, too." He asked, prompting Yuji to shrug his shoulders. "I don't know, man. It just sucks." The young Mutou answered. "But on the bright side, he doesn't pay attention to his cards. Which means..." Yuji trailed off before reaching into his pocket, pulling a stack of 55 cards from it's depths, and showing it to his new friend.

Kazuma's eyes widened when he witnessed Yuji pull the most valuable deck in history from his pocket. "Y-you have it!?" He asked. "You can't just... just THROW those in your pocket! That deck is legendary! You gotta treat it with respect!" Kazuma's advice would then be met by a casual shrug from Yuji. "I mean, I don't get why. It's just some cardboard." He said, with Kazuma groaning in frustration. "L-look, I have some card sleeves in my backpack. The front pocket. Take them and-for the love of Obelisk-put those cards in sleeves." Kazuma almost demanded, turning his back towards Yuji so the latter could grab the aforementioned sleeves, which he did.

"Alright, that's my class over there. I'll see you later. And if you have time after school, I'll play a couple rounds with you." Kazuma spoke as he walked away from Yuji's side, waving goodbye with his one arm. "I'll take you up on that. See ya." Yuji replied, waving back as he walked off towards his own classroom.
