The chandeliers dripped gold over the ballroom like molten sunlight, their light catching on crystal flutes, sequined gowns, and the polished marble floors that had hosted centuries of wealthy footsteps. It was a hall built for opulence—built, Jennie Kim often thought, to remind everyone inside who truly ran the world.

Tonight, however, she felt none of the thrill she usually carried into spaces like this.

Jennie stood with her father, Ji-ho Kim, as they chatted with the Bloomfields—a family whose empire reached through pharmaceuticals, shipping, and enough political ties to wrap Washington like a spiderweb. Her father's laugh, deep and commanding, rose above the softer champagne-fueled murmurs around them.

Jennie, in her couture black gown whose clean lines emphasized her confidence and station, knew she completed the image.

The heir.
The successor.
The future of Kim Industries.

Every step she took, every glance she allowed, every carefully measured breath screamed power, control, authority—things she had been groomed to embody long before she learned how to spell either of her parents' names.

But right now? None of that mattered.

Right now she wanted to be anywhere but here.

Her jaw tightened the slightest bit, a twitch barely noticeable to anyone who didn't know her as well as her father did. Her left hand—free of jewelry except for the slim, platinum heir's ring her father had placed on her finger the moment she turned twenty-one—pressed lightly against the stem of her wineglass.

She hated these events.
Hated the artificial laughter, the forced networking, the endless parade of families who only cared about the Kims if they needed something.

But her father insisted.

"These nights are good business," he always said. "Connections shape empires, not factories."

And so Jennie attended, playing the role expected of her, smiling when she needed to, offering small nods of acknowledgment to every man or woman who approached with admiration thinly veiled as politeness.

Everyone already knew who she was.

Jennie Kim.
Only child.
Next in line.
The heir who would one day hold Kim Industries in the palm of her manicured hand.

She took a slow sip of her wine, letting the taste linger on her tongue as her eyes drifted around the ballroom. People waltzed in designer gowns, businessmen chatted with their spouses standing rigid and glossy beside them, and servers weaved expertly between clusters of power.

Couples. Deals. Rivalries. Legacies.

Nothing here excited her anymore.

She swallowed her sigh and returned her attention to the Bloomfields, who were discussing expansion into renewable energy. Her father offered a firm nod at the eldest Bloomfield son.

"A smart move," Ji-ho said, voice smooth like polished steel. "We've been watching that sector closely. My daughter will be spearheading our future projects once she officially transitions into her role."

Jennie held her smile in place as all eyes shifted to her—as always.

"Impressive," Mr. Bloomfield said, extending his hand to Jennie. "A young woman in control of such an empire... your father must be proud."

"I am," Ji-ho responded, his tone firm but unmistakably proud. He reached to lightly brush Jennie's arm, a small, practiced gesture of support that always made Jennie feel more like a product being presented than a person being praised.
