But he tried all the same. He took a large and fresh green leaf he found from the floor that didn't seem as dead as the rest that were on the floor.. He then found two small but strong twigs and cleaned them on his shirt. Then he took Ace's front paw and attempted to take out the bullet. A gooey and black red thing came out. Yifan didn't know if it was the bullet or not. If it wasn't, then he can't bandage his leg up yet, because then the bullet will still be inside. And if it was, and Yifan still tried to pluck something out, he may damage the dog's bones or muscles.
He weighed his options, and finally decided to try again. He hoped that he wasn't wrong, and plunged the twigs into Ace's leg again, making him yelp in pain.
'It's okay, Ace, just a little pain. We'll get you patched up in no time!' Yifan says cheerfully.
The dog seemed to relax a little bit. Or was it Yifan's imagination?
He seemed to find something. He held the twig like tweezers and plucked it out. He gasped. It was Ace's bone.
'I - I'm so sorry!' He cried. 'Don't worry, we're going to find another town and get a real doctor to save you. I promise. Ace, hang in there, I beg you!' He sniffed, angry at his own stupidity. He wrapped the leaf around Ace's leg and paw, hopefully making him feel less pain.
He then wrapped the bone into a pouch he kept in his coat pocket, hoping to really find a doctor to save Ace.
He has walked, sometimes carrying Ace out of guilt and sympathy, for two days now, and the forest hasn't changed for one bit. If only he'd gone the other way, not through the forest! But the fear of meeting the men of J.E.M was too great for him to take risks.
But taking the long route was all for naught as a giant cloud of mist appeared and a large whirling was heard. Panicking, Yifan tried to run, but he was too tired now, and he could never outrun whatever was making such a big wind and loud noise.
Through the mist, he saw four men in a small helicopter. But instead of the white and black gear that the men who wrecked his town were, these men were dressed head to toe in black and red.
Yifan was wary. For an eight year old, he was bright enough to know that a change of clothes doesn't change the people on the inside, just like a smile doesn't mean the person inside isn't actually very annoyed.
The door to the helicopter opened.
Yifan grasped Ace tightly in his arms.
Three men stepped out, while the pilot stayed inside. They looked hostile, and they stared at the boy as if he was a fly they were trying to catch.
'What do you want,' Yifan said, trying not to shake.
'Nothing. We were just wondering why a boy like you is out in the woods alone.' The one who seemed the youngest sneered.
'I'm not alone.'
The men instantly tensed up.
'I've got Ace,' He held him up.
The men instantly relaxed and grinned. 'Have you now?' Another person sneered.
'Now, don't lie to us, sonny, and tell us the truth. We know you're running from someone. Who?' The oldest one said. His tone sounded serious and firm compared to the other two.
'What will happen if I tell you?' Yifan asked, shaking again.
The man who asked him smiled. Yifan couldn't decide if it was scary or nice. Ace whimpered in his arms.
'Wrong question, sonny. It's what won't happen if you tell us.' He chuckled coarsely, the other two laughing like maniacs. 'Nice one, Ax,' the youngest one gasped out, laughing so much that he had to gasp for air.
Yifan refused to be intimidated, and answered firmly, 'My town has being destroyed by J.E.M. I am running away from them for my life.' There. He had said it. Now he could only hope that he made the right decision, and that these people weren't with J.E.M.
To his surprise and relief, the men just laughed.
'You're running away from J.E.M?' One of them said, chortling. The youngest one thumped his mate on the back. 'Cap'n, I think he should come with us. He's running from J.E.M! Ha!' He burst out laughing again.
The oldest looked at Yifan, amused.
'So...you're the good guys?' Yifan ventured to ask. It didn't seem like they were part of J.E.M judging by their reaction.
It seemed like everything the boy said just made them laugh all the harder.
'I guess you could say that,' The youngest said.
'Really?! Then, please, can you help Ace? He got shot and I accidentally pulled out his bone!' He thrust Ace at the man who the youngest had called captain. 'And this is his bone!' He passed the pouch to him as well.
The eldest opened the pouch and examined the object carefully. And smiled.
'This, sonny, is not a bone. This is a bullet.'
Yifan's eyes widened.
'You plucked this out yourself, you say?' The captain raised his eyebrows.
'Y-yes...'
He turned and talked to the other two.
Yifan could hear a few words between their whispers.
'...could be....quite useful...did...all by himself...don't think...even Baekhyun...no...would be able to do...only seven or eight...'
Yifan looked at them quizzically. 'Does this mean Ace is alright now?'
The captain smiled down at him. 'Yes. And we've being talking - would you like to come with us and train?'
Yifan looked confused. 'Train for what?'
'We are a group of elites, trained professionally for the sole purpose of hunting down J.E.M. Come with us and we will train you to be the best. And then you can take revenge on J.E.M.' He said persuasively, making it sound like he was giving Yifan a choice. If he said no, he'd have to kill him right there and then.
'And besides, you don't have anywhere else to go, right?'
Yifan seemed uneasy at first, but the doubt disappeared from his eyes as he asked the eldest, 'Who are you?'
The captain grinned triumphantly. 'I am M, leader of MSK.'
