"I live in a pretty boring town, SnagFall, I have no clue why we named our town after a dead tree?"
"It's really ironic, since we are surrounded by a huge forest, a couple of forest watcher stations and some abandoned places but never mind that, what I really want to get down is the mysterious rise of road kills."
"There would be road kills of small, dead, rotten animals on a lot of our town's roads."
"You might be thinking "no shit there's gonna be blah blah blah" but here's the thing."
"It's every single day there would be at least twenty roadkills reported and I find that weird?"
"I don't even believe some of them are even road kills but I don't have concrete proof."
"But I'm gonna uncover this myst-."
"Mandy, our shift is over, why the hell are you not at the register?" said by a woman's voice.
In an instant I quickly tapped on my phone screen to stop recording my voice, she looked at me trying to keep a straight face but I knew she wanted to laugh.
I was sitting where the customer would usually eat their food, a wide rectangle table that would still have ketchup smeared on it, since nobody came in this late hour, I've been conducting my research there.
She leaned over trying to peek over my phone.
"So uhh what were you doing?" She let out a chuckle, having her elbows on my shoulder.
I gave an obviously fake laugh. "May, I'm not doing anything, what made you think I was up to something?" I cringed when I said that.
May looked at me, liked I said something stupid, which I did.
"Oh, I don't know? Maybe because you aren't at the register."
She pointed at the register which I was supposed to be at.
May will always try to get an answer from me and will always be successful with it.
I got up from the seat and the smell of french fries reached my nose. The whole building we were in was really bright white, with the occasional flickering lights.
"You said our shift is already over, right?" I nervously laughed, I half assed and put my phone in my pocket which was sticking out like a sore thumb, "I'm gonna head out... As you said, the shift's over. We don't get overtime in this burger joint."
I walked past her trying to get behind the counter, walking past the empty table with no one in sight. I looked at her while pulling two thumbs up.
"Mandy you know you don't have a ride, right? And you know damn well you are not gonna be walking home."
I stopped walking and turned around to face her, seeing her smirking face looking at me.
She took a couple of steps towards me.
Then she started to poke my forehead.
She always did this to get an answer from me and it always worked on me.
And she is relentless, she can do this for days, the longest time I did not tell her what I was doing was for three days, I couldn't take it.
"Ow okay, I was just recording my voice for my research on the abnormal road kills going around."
She stopped, I rubbed my forehead since she had sharp nails,
which she doesn't cut, she probably likes to see it as a torture weapon against me.
