Summary of Book One — Arena of Fate
Maggie Mellark, the shy, witty, gentle younger sister of Peeta Mellark, is unexpectedly reaped for the 74th Annual Hunger Games — thrusting her into a brutal world she was never prepared for.
Inside the arena, Maggie faces betrayal from her district partner Rowan, forms a protective bond with Rue, and develops an unlikely and deeply complicated connection with Cato Hadley, the lethal Career tribute from District Two. What begins as cautious curiosity grows into whispered conversations, stolen moments on rooftops, and an unspoken promise not to hunt one another.
But survival has a cost.
Maggie endures loss, grief, and the trauma of taking a life. She loses Rue, confronts the danger of the Careers, and ultimately helps end the Games in a dramatic final fight, collapsing beside Cato as both succumb to their injuries.
When Maggie wakes alone, she believes Cato has died — until the Capitol reveals a shocking twist:
