How Charles went insane:

  At the end of San Sebastian, where the sea meets the land, the soldiers worked together to fight against the zombies til the boat arrived. Charles ran towards the boat, but... He was suddenly kicked off the boat by someone unknown, which rowed away. He shouted for help, only for the crowd to watch as a Shambler attacked him and ripped his eye out.

  Many expected him to die as they row away to the HMS Undaunted, but, surprisingly, he survived. He managed to run into the forest while in pain. He only lived there for a few days, only to turn insane because no one will ever save him for many reasons, his weakness, his family, everything. He felt no pain as he wandered, because he was stuck in his own little world.

  Eventually, he was saved by the British soldiers, who fear him due to his nonsensical words and imagination. His cousin Thomas was happy, but a bit regretful to see him.

  After a few days of being taken care by the surgeons, he finally snapped back to his own self. What is more weird is that he recalled something heavenly was guiding him through safety when he went insane.

Elias and Friedrich's tale:

  Elias was residing in a church with the other Austrian soldiers when the Prussian army barged in. Seeing no other choice, the Austrian army pushed Elias to be the only translator ( or sacrifice ), which ended up well with the Austrian army teaming up with the Prussian army.

  Friedrich, who was with the Prussian army, took a bit of interest in Elias. He observed his behaviour around the others and his interests in order to know him. He soon teamed up with Elias as a form of protection. During the time where the cannibals wouldn't appear yet, Friedrich would share information about every type of zombie he had seen and how to dodge and kill them effectively to Elias.

  While gathering supplies both armies found a scared Russian Sapper, who was fluent in German. He was supposedly left behind by his army, and seeing that he isn't hostile, they brought him to the team. It would only last for a bit until they found the Russian army, who complained that their Sapper got lost.
  On the way to the castle, Elias and Friedrich's bond were getting stronger, to the point both had romantic feelings for each other. In order to get that away, Friedrich told Elias about his training, and General Blücher, who looks mean but smart with his strategies.

  What is more surprising is that there were two Bavarian soldiers residing in the castle, considering that they sneaked in. Putting that aside, the armies went up to the top of the castle, to meet General Blücher with his trusted Officer. The other armies ( except Friedrich, Elias, the Russian sap and the other Bavarian soldier as they stayed as representatives ) went down to open the cellar and prepare their defenses. After General Blücher gave his word to each representative, they went to help their own armies, except Friedrich. He then talked to the Officer about staying to protect the general, only for the Officer to get mauled by the general.Using his sabre, Friedrich killed the viral general. He then gave his thanks to the dead general and the dead Officer before heading down to help his army. Luckily, Elias got his musket. All four armies held out the zombies for as long as they can, with Elias helping Friedrich as usual. During the stay at the castle, Friedrich started to feel sick. Elias was a bit worried, and said his honest words to Friedrich. Suddenly, Friedrich convulsed, a sign of turning, forcing Elias to back away and watch as the priest gave him mercy.
