There are some people you meet once and somehow spend years believing you will never lose.

Laius Sinclair was that person for Caelis Mercer.

He was there before the big dreams.

Before the careers.

Before the apartment they would one day share.

Before the ring.

Before the promises.

Before either of them understood that loving someone and keeping someone were two entirely different things.

Back then, Caelis thought love was simple.

You found someone.

You chose them.

And then you stayed.

She had believed that with the kind of certainty only young people could have—the kind that made forever sound less like a promise and more like a fact.

Laius believed it too.

At least, she thought he did.

They had been young when they met.

Two strangers sitting in the same university hallway, surrounded by people who would eventually become forgotten names and places they would eventually stop visiting.

He was carrying a notebook.

She was carrying a sketchbook.

Neither of them knew that those two things would become the beginning of everything.

Caelis remembered the first time he spoke to her.

"You draw?"

She looked up from her sketchbook.

"You write?"

He glanced down at the notebook in his hands.

"Sometimes."

"Then yes."

She smiled.

"Sometimes."

It was such a small conversation.

Neither of them knew it would become a lifetime of them.
