• Mary Elizabeth Jenkins Surratt was an American boarding house owner who was convicted of taking part in the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. Sentenced to death, she was hanged, becoming the first woman executed by the United States federal government. Mary Elizabeth Jenkins Surratt uttered these last words as she was being executed in public. She was sentenced to be hanged after being found guilty of treason.
