The wind outside the window was cool, carrying with it the quiet hum of foreign lands - so different from the golden grandeur of the Obelian Empire. Yet in the silence, the past refused to fade.

Anastacius stood by the window, his reflection dim in the glass, the weight of ten long years pressing against his shoulders.

"It's been ten years," he murmured, voice low, almost fragile. "But... thankfully, some memories are still vivid."

He raised his hand, golden magic pulsing faintly from his fingertips. Light gathered and bloomed before him - forming a woman's figure, elegant and proud. Her hair gleamed like burnished copper, her eyes emerald and sharp as a blade.

Penelope Judith.
The name itself was a scar that refused to heal.

From behind him, a small, curious voice spoke.

"Wow," Jennette breathed, staring at the shimmering vision. "Her eyes are green like mine... So I take after my mother, right?"

Anastacius froze. The question was innocent - the kind only a child could ask without realizing how deep it cut.

His first thought was cold and bitter.

A woman who seduced her fiancé's brother to become Empress.

But he swallowed the truth. The child before him did not need to inherit his regrets, or her mother's sins.

So he smiled - faintly, gently, as if speaking to a dream.

"Hmm... She was very brave," he said at last. "Her eyes shone with dreams."

Jennette's face lit up, her expression full of wonder. "Really? Then she must've been amazing!"

Anastacius only nodded, unable to speak.

In his mind, the memories came unbidden - sharp and alive, as if no time had passed. He saw Penelope as she had been: standing in the Imperial ballroom beneath the light of countless chandeliers, her voice clear and commanding. Her gaze never trembled, not even when the nobles whispered behind her back.

Eyes blazing with ambition... A woman without warmth, who would stop at nothing to reach her goal.

That was the Penelope Judith the court remembered - a woman who rose from a minor noble house to the throne itself. They called her ruthless. They called her cold.

But Anastacius had seen something else.

He had seen the way her hands trembled slightly before grand banquets - hidden behind a glass of wine. The quiet exhaustion in her eyes when she thought no one was watching. The way she would whisper to herself, "I have to keep going... I can't lose again."

"Was there even a person with that kind of audacity back then?" he whispered, more to himself than anyone. "She feared nothing in this world."

He paused - then laughed quietly, shaking his head.

"No... not nothing. Except cockroaches."

The memory surfaced so vividly that he almost smiled - Penelope clutching her gown, shrieking imperiously for him to "prove his worth as Emperor" and dispose of the creature immediately. For all her pride and cruelty, she was, in her strangest moments, profoundly human.

Anastacius turned back to the window, watching the pale reflection of his face flicker beside hers in the glass.

"Considering I've thrown away my royal title and buried myself in a foreign land with Jennette," he murmured, "she'd probably abandon everything and turn her back on me."

A rueful smile ghosted his lips.

"Maybe even throw her wine at me, calling me a traitor who survived alone. Like back then."

He could still see it - that night. Her fury, the crack of crystal against marble, red wine staining her white gloves. She had always loved beautifully, even in anger.

"Come to think of it," he said softly, "she really was a mad woman."

The words were fond - not an insult, but a confession.

He let the silence stretch. The image of Penelope flickered, then dimmed. Only her eyes remained for a moment - that same green fire that once challenged the world.

"Amazing," he whispered, "how clearly I remember it all. Even though I wasn't in my right mind after Karax got to me..."

His gaze fell to Jennette - her gentle smile, her soft presence, her mother's eyes without her mother's storm.

"Still..."

His voice broke slightly.

"...I think I loved her more than I realized."

The magic faded completely, leaving only moonlight.

He stood there for a long while, hand pressed against the cold glass, as if reaching for a ghost.

Outside, the stars shimmered above foreign skies - the same stars that once watched over the Obelian throne, where a cunning empress and a weary emperor had ruled side by side, feared by all but understood by none.

They were villains in the world's eyes.
But beneath the crown, they were simply two broken souls - too proud to beg for love, too human to stop seeking it.

And though history would remember Penelope Judith as a manipulative woman and Anastacius de Alger Obelia as a fallen tyrant, only he would ever know the truth:

That for one brief, impossible moment...
The villains had been in love.
