"We've lost Craig as a potential witness, we've now lost Whisper, there isn't testimony to push back against this Erik is homosexual theory. It's not looking good."
Erik is gay. Here we go again. This shit gets so boring so quickly. "I still don't agree with this discussion about his sexuality - touching your child is illegal, not wanting a guy in your bed."
"I hate it too, but I've seen how these juries are and your parents are very clearly using this to break the case open and claim you're both lying."
"Isn't there a responsibility of the court to handle these types of cases with sensitivity?" Alice asks as she takes a spoonful to her mouth.
"Not by the book, no. We've just got to hope Weisberg doesn't continue dragging us to hell this week. When I've spoken to this week's witnesses, everyone seems prepared."
"Seems unlikely."
"Mm! Also, so Marta told me she'll give me the cards for you tomorrow morning, so you guys can get yourself fixed up somewhere comfortable. They understand Beverly Hills would be tough for you to visit without Erik."
That's good, at least. The family are going to give me access to some cards so that Alice and I can stay in California, Monday through to Friday, without being concerned about travelling back to New York every day. It's a relief they're doing this.
"Maybe." Leslie starts. "You both could stay there on the Saturday and have an evening together, just being young together for a night."
Being young together for a night.
The last time Alice and I made the mistake of going near each other, my brother fucking overdosed and I ended up getting too distracted to notice the facility was calling me. So there's no way that'll ever be repeated. I feel like it's an unspoken rule between Alice and I now.
I don't think we'll ever go back to being that normal couple. We never were, and I don't think that's an option for us. We're still together – nobody has broken up with the other, and we still sleep in the same bed. We help each other through Erik's emotional struggles and worries, but I think anything else is off-limits. There's nothing really couple-like about us.
"I don't know, I think I gotta focus on Erik and the trial and t—"
"That doesn't mean you can't have dinner together."
"It's fine." Alice smiles. "Lyle and I rather just focus on Erik and his safety. Instead of trying to blame anybody for testifying, it represents the kind of person Whisper is if she's willing to let Erik potentially lose his case and get his life and his child's life endangered, just because she's got a bruised ego."
If things weren't so messed up right now, I'd fucking marry this girl just from that last sentence.
"You two don't think Erik will feel some kind of way?" Leslie leans back in the couch.
"I think Erik is smarter than he used to be." I know it, in fact. "There was a time he couldn't stop crying about wanting that girl back, he doesn't do that anymore. That connection is broken. But of course, the baby situation is different."
"Well, we can't tell him yet." She responds absolutely. "We can't risk jeopardising before your testimony starts."
Exactly. That needs to be the priority. Testifying and encouraging his progression and looking after his wellbeing. That comes before anything else.
Getting him home, that's the important thing.
That's important.
