The sound of the evening adhan drifted softly through the air, its echo melting into the fading golden sky. Jemilah sat quietly by her window, her diary open but untouched. Words usually poured from her heart onto the pages, but tonight, silence filled her. She had spent weeks trying to understand the strange feeling that tugged at her chest  a mixture of longing, fear, and hope.

Her mother had mentioned Yaasir’s name again earlier that day, not in a commanding way, but in the gentle tone mothers use when they sense a secret their daughters won’t confess.

“Jemilah,” she had said softly, “sometimes Allah places people in our lives as a test, and sometimes as a blessing. Pray for clarity, my dear.”

Jemilah hadn’t responded. How could she? Yaasir wasn’t just anyone. He was the man whose voice lingered in her mind after every Qur’an class, the one whose presence carried both calmness and an unspoken weight.

That evening, as Jemilah closed her diary, her phone buzzed. A short message lit up the screen:

“Assalamu Alaikum, Jemilah. I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to ask… would it be wrong of me to speak with your father?”

Her heart skipped. The words were polite, respectful, and carried the very weight she feared.

Her fingers trembled as she typed back:
“Wa Alaikum Salam, Yaasir. This is unexpected… what do you mean exactly?”

The reply came quicker than she expected.
“I mean it in the most respectful way. I’ve been making du’a for clarity, and it keeps leading me here. Jemilah… I don’t want to waste words or time. I want to do things the right way, the halal way.”

She swallowed hard, staring at the screen. The room suddenly felt smaller, her heartbeat louder. She wanted to type something, anything, but her emotions blurred into a storm.

Finally, she wrote:
“Yaasir, this is a big step. I wasn’t expecting this conversation tonight.”

There was a pause. She imagined him holding his phone, carefully choosing every word. Yaasir was never reckless with speech. When his response came, it made her heart ache and soften at once.

“I know. But Jemilah, I’ve seen enough to know you are someone whose faith comes before everything else. That alone… is enough for me to take this step. I won’t pressure you, but I need you to know my intentions.”

Jemilah closed her eyes, whispering, “Ya Allah, guide me.” She remembered her mother’s words: a test, or a blessing. Was this the answer she had been too afraid to acknowledge?

Her fingers moved again.
“Yaasir, give me some time. This is not something I can answer in one night. But I hear you. And I… respect you for saying this the way you did.”

On the other side of the conversation, Yaasir smiled faintly. He had not expected an immediate yes  he only wanted her to know his heart was sincere.

“Take all the time you need, Jemilah. I’ll keep making du’a. Whatever is best, Allah will make it clear.”

Their chat ended there, but sleep was far from both of them. Jemilah lay awake, staring at the ceiling, her heart torn between fear of the unknown and the strange peace his words had brought.

Meanwhile, Yaasir performed two rak’ahs of gratitude, whispering into the quiet night, “Ya Allah, if she is written for me, make this path easy. And if not, replace my heart with contentment.”

The night sky deepened, stars scattering across the heavens as though writing their own stories. And in the quiet of two hearts, a whisper of Nikah began to unfold…
