Prologue: The Sunstone's Fall

The curse was a patient thief. For a thousand years, it had slowly leached the light from Veridia, the ancient, sea-kissed kingdom built upon the remnants of the First Queen’s power. It did not strike with fire or plague; it simply faded the colors, silenced the birds, and, most cruelly, shortened the lives of the royal Sunstone lineage. Every Queen and King knew their reign was a countdown, their life-force tied not just to the kingdom, but to the health of the fading magical core: the Sunstone Heart.

Lyra, Princess and future Queen, had lived her twenty years knowing she was the last flicker of a dying star. Her hair, the color of spun copper, felt heavy with the weight of that knowledge. She could feel the subtle, constant drain of the curse every morning—a phantom chill that no amount of Veridia's waning sunlight could truly warm.

The Shadowfell Empire, however, was no patient thief. It was a hungry predator.

King Aethos Volkar, the 'Dark King,' ruler of the Shadowfell and master of the Void, did not deal in curses, but in conquest. He knew the ancient prophecy, scribbled on a hidden scroll in the deepest library of his citadel: that the Sunstone line would one day yield a Vessel whose blood held the unbound Fire, a power that could either defeat his Shadow or make it eternal. Eternal. That single word was the engine of his thousand-year ambition.

The final battle for Veridia was less a siege and more an execution. Aethos himself broke through the city walls, his shadow magic turning the very stones to dust. Lyra stood on the ramparts beside her ailing father, King Eron, her sword Aethera—a blade forged in the last true sunlight of the First Queen's reign—gripped tight. Her armor shone with the faint, residual light of the city's dying core.

"Father, please," Lyra pleaded, her voice trembling but steady. "You must retreat. I can buy you time to reach the ships."

King Eron, his face etched with premature weariness and the grey pallor of the curse, gently laid a hand on her shoulder.

"No, my Lyra. I am the anchor of this light, and I am almost spent. You are the fire. Run, my daughter. Find a way to keep the Sunstone name alive."

He barely finished the sentence when the King of Shadowfell stood before them, immense in his obsidian armor. A chilling vacuum of silence preceded him. Lyra fought with the furious, desperate strength of a doomed kingdom. She was fast, relentless, a dazzling flash of steel and defiance. But Aethos was an abyss. Every strike she made was absorbed, every effort vanishing into the cold void he commanded.

He caught her blade with a single, gloved hand, the steel grating uselessly against the reinforced obsidian gauntlet. His strength was not just physical; it felt like the crushing weight of a planet. His voice, when he finally spoke, was a low, chilling whisper that resonated not in her ears, but in her soul:

"You carry fire in your veins, little one—fire that was always meant to be mine."

With a surge of terrifying darkness, he didn't strike her; he struck the city's heart. He crushed the Sunstone Heart—the city’s core—with a blast of pure shadow. As the light of Veridia died forever, Aethos seized Lyra, pulling her against the crushing reality of his armored chest. She felt the searing, terrifying heat of the power in her own blood—the prophesied Fire—erupting in a blinding flare of chaotic light that vanished instantly, stolen by his touch. Veridia fell in that moment, and Lyra, the last Sunstone, lost consciousness, claimed by the King of Shadow.
